For things like smoking or alcohol, yes. For oil and energy production which are the lifeblood of our economy, it is punishment and a horribly regressive tax that will result in higher prices not just for gas or energy but for all goods and services.

Actually, that's it. It's turning out he was right about nearly every major issue in the last decade, and people are starting to say "Hey....exactly why isn't this guy president???" Considering the other candidates, I think he was the right choice.

Agreed - it's very unfortunate all of the different issues that fall along party lines, many of them contradictory. How is it that the Christian right, who regularly eschew science, claim that their party's science is more accurate in terms of global warming?

What that chain letter doesn't state is Gore gets the majority of his electricity from green sources. Do some other research besides a Snopes chain letter before you start trashing the guy. He really is trying to make a difference for everybody's good. He has no plans to run for any political office, he dontates profits he makes from his campaign- what more you want the guy to do? Crucify himself on TV or something?

The thread is about the nobel peace prize and al gore, not lab tests. Also the policies developed off of science are political. Protests about nuclear warheads were not apolitical simply because it was a debate about nuclear science.

1. It REALLY REALLY bothers me that people suffer under the delusion that science by consensus is science at all. Lots of scientists believe in god too, does that make it a scientific fact? I'm not saying that global warming isn't real, just that you can't use consensus as a reason to support it.

2. Energy conservation is not a long term economic opportunity. We have been mining efficiency for increased energy budget for thirty years now, and there's only so much to gain there. Sooner or later, we have to admit that we either stagnate economically or we pursue technologies that INCREASE our energy output. You can't run a power system on solar or wind, and people aren't willing to use nuclear yet, so "dirty" tech is our only option. Besides, isn't it smarter for us to buy and use up foreign energy supplies first and save our own for when the oil is actually scarce?

Think of how much energy needs to be spent on these new technologies. More energy/waste goes into making some things than what comes out. (example: Halogen light bulbs made in China, and fuel made from Corn)
