I have a Samsung TSK3092WF which is a 30" 16:9 widescreen that is EDTV which means everything gets upconverted to 480P. I don't think this is one of em!

Correct. The image, if it displays at all, will look scrambled.

Touche, though the manual I linked to doesn't cover the 2092. I wish the Akai online manual was more robust. The plot thickens.....

Struck out in Cary, NC. None of this model is in stock. I'm not sure I want to tool around Raleigh to find one.

Ok I'm a n00b

If I buy this tomorrow there'll be an option to convert viewing to 4:3 mode right? I won't have to watch standard programming all squashed up funny?

Why not call ahead? Now this is a real hot deal - spend 10cent on a phone call and save hours of time and gallons of gas :0 🙂

you get two vertical bars on the side.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but Sams Club does have a membership fee, right? I've never shopped there before.

If this Akai was based on the Samsung - which sells for $999 @ Best Buy, this would be a "hot" deal.

Ooooh!!! It's pricey, but for a 16:9 screen I want it!!!
Although normal TV viewing on it will be slightly smaller than a 27", I don't care! Just the coolness factor alone is worth it. I would be the only one in my circle of friends and family that has one. It would be different and unique since TV's have been 4:3 since at least the 1950's and everyone is used to seeing them.
If my local Sam's has one, I'm buying it!!!

I don't know if it's the same, but I have an old ('97 or so) Sony 32" widescreen TV, and it has 3 viewing modes. The normal mode is 16x9. Anamorphic & most normal WS DVDs fit perfectly. Normal 4x3 TV is stretched (everyone looks a little fat). This is the mode I keep it in, I just got used to everyone being fat (it's not really noticeable after you get used to it). 4x3 mode has 2 vertical black bars on each side. I hate them (I feel like I'm wasting tv space) so that's why I usually keep it in 16x9 mode. The 3rd mode is 4x3 blown up to 16x9, with the top & bottom cut off (cropped). Widescreen TV shows (like Farscape) work best in this mode so the black bars are gone (mostly).

You won't know til you buy it or see it in store. I doubt they have dvd hooked up to it in sams so check how their tv signal looks. Most new ones crop the sides of the screen so you basically have like a 25" 4:3 tv screen in the middle of your 30" widescreen. That's what I would expect. I saw some stretched screens in a store the other day and it doesn't look good.

Yes, but it used to be quite easy to get a free one day pass. Sometimes the pass incurs a surcharge (5%-10%, in which case you might as well buy a membership for a $500 item), sometimes there is no surcharge.

Another way around it used to be to buy a GC at WalMart, and use the GC at Sam's Club. Used to be no surcharge, but that may have changed as well......

so which is it?

Mode 1:
The normal mode is 16x9. Anamorphic & most normal WS DVDs fit perfectly. Normal 4x3 TV is stretched (everyone looks a little fat). This is the mode I keep it in, I just got used to everyone being fat (it's not really noticeable after you get used to it).

Mode 2:

Mode 3:
The 3rd mode is 4x3 blown up to 16x9, with the top & bottom cut off (cropped). Widescreen TV shows (like Farscape) work best in this mode so the black bars are gone (mostly).

Hopefully that clears up what I was trying to say a little. Like I said, I have an old sony, so this one may be different. Your best bet would be to either read the manual if you can or try it out at the store if possible.

It's my understanding that the 30" Samsung @ Best Buy is HDTV capable. It does not have an HDTV tuner included with it. Am I correct in this assumption?

Yes, u are correct, Samsung does not make a WS that is non hdtv capable. 99% of all HDTV type tv's do niot have a tuner built in and it is wise to buy one that DOESNT have it as receiving and HDTV signal depends on if you have Direct TV, dish network, your particualr cable co, or if u want to receive them Over the air. Each will use a different tuner and most that come built in to the TV only support Direct TV.

This Akai will not and can not accept a progressive scan signal or any type of HDTV signal.

The TSK model referrenced in this thread is 2-3 year old model that has been replaced by the TSL series from Last year and the TSM series which is the currently available model.

UPDATE:

I just went to Sam's Club (Torrance, CA) to take a closer look (I can't stop thinking about this stinking TV!). It is VERY basic. I went through the menu and there are only basic picture functions (color, tint, etc.) and audio functions (bass, treble, etc.) as well as time and language - that's about it. There is no option for 4:3 viewing. BUT this was using the front panel controls since there was no remote with the display so there may be more options on the remote. I'm going to assume this is not a Samsung rebadge since they don't make non-HDTV wide screen tube displays. In fact, nobody but Akai does, but I couldn't care less about HD signals, though progressive scan would be nice. Comb filter comes into play during regular TV viewing right? This would make it a big selling point. The picture looks very nice (up there with the Toshiba 36" HDTV they also had), but yes, 16:9 viewing stretches regular pictures a bit. Honestly though, I had a Samsung 16:9 LCD display and you don't even realize until you compare it directly with a 4:3 set. Any other 16:9 tube will cost as much as a 50" 16:9 projection - this is HOT, IMHO. I'm dumping my 27" Wega and getting this. I really hope the Concord store has it in stock when I get back from vacation. Torrance is on back order. Now if somebody can find a free temp membership as in the past...

Oh yeah - it's actually $496 and change (Get yourself some McDonald's on the way home) 😀

Well, I'd love to have a widescreen tv for movies. Is this set worth the price or not? I'm waiting for O-LED TV's before going the HDTV route, which will probably be a few years yet. So, bottom line ....Is this worth the price?

Its not HDTV...dont want it
This is like buying the lowest end Honda Civic and putting a Type R Badge on it.
