Akai 30" 16:9 Wide Flatscreen TV $499 & change @ Sam's B&M

Just went to Sam's Club and saw a very nice 30" widescreen TV from Akai. Not sure if this is a Samsung rebadge like the 27" 4:3. Not HDTV, but digital comb filter and component video for less than half the price of most 30" wide screen HDTV tubes. Great for DVDs

just so you know...

the digital comb filter doesn't do anything for component or s-video. if you are using either of these connections, the chroma information is already seperated out and the quality of the comb filter shouldn't be a selling point.

My geometry is rusty -- how is a 21" diagonal tube a 30" TV?

Wait, that can't be right - 21 diag would make it onlyt 12.6 on the side right? Seems tiny. Hoover era TVs, is that 21 a typo?

I think it has to be a typo Greg03. I can't wait to see this thing in person. The 27" Magnavox is getting a bit old for movies...

HD ratio TVs are "easy" to determine the height of. A triangle with 9 and 16 legs has 18(.35) as it's hypotenuse, so the height of an HD screen is roughly half the diagonal measurement. You're on your own for the width 🙂

This is a good sign...the 20" in my kitchen is starting to wig out, but I really don't want to replace it with some looser 4:3 set. I might be willing to swing $500. Of course, if they'd just put an ATSC tuner in these I'd buy two (someday the TV in the bedroom's gonna die, too).

I was just at sams and I'm looking to get a new TV and they had a 27" flatscreen for $350 as well as the wide screen. Does anyone know anything about this TV? I saw that kimchee411 said that it was a rebadged samsung, is this true? Any info would be great because I'm planning on getting a TV very soon.

Damn, me too. Some more positive info on this would be nice. 😀

Here is a link to a very cheap 25" from samsclub.com that you can also get B&M.

Akai 25"

And here is a link to the Akai webpage that has info about all their TV's. It looks too good to be true but we could be just getting lucky.

Akai home

If anyone has had expirence with any of the TV's at sams i'd very much like to hear about it.

I've convinced my wife to allow me to at least LOOK at it 😀

I'll let you know what I find out. (hopefully they'll have one)

I have a question. Does progressive scan make any difference on NTSC interlaced televisions (i.e. normal TVs)? I mean, just because the DVD player can create a full frame instead of every other line, wouldn't the TV still display it interlaced? I'm thinking that maybe progressive scan is for projectors.

I belive progressive scan is for HDTV. This TV doesn't support progressive scan output. I doubt it would even work if the DVD player is set to progressive.

😀 I bought 27" flat screen akai, last year, jan 2002.

have had an 'excellent' experience.

just finished connecting ps2 and kenwood htb.

How does the 30" 16:9 look next to the 27" 4:3? Using my tools, here is a dimension comparison (in inches):

16:9 - 14H / 26W / 30D

4:3 - 16H / 21W / 27D

For normal viewing, the 27" would give you two more vertical viewing inches, but for movies, it's no contest.

remember guys the thing we don't know is whether or not the 30" is a rebadged Samsung. If so then cool... but does samsung make this size tube? I don't know.

Who cares about the two inches when you're gaining FREAKING WIDESCREEN 😀...

<---- seriously needs a new TV

I believe your post needs a muahhahahahah at the end. Think my wife would be pissed if I came home with one today? 🙂

Check out the manual for the Samsung TSK3092:

http://www.samsungusa.com/cmc_upload/0/000/125/610/TSK2792.PDF

The model number is pretty close to Akai CFT3090, don't you think? The illustration of the TSK3092 looks just like the Akai CFT3090. All of Samsung's newer 30" sets are HD ready, so those are elminated.
