Since installing the AK31 motherboard I am having problems with "memory dump" Every once in a while the systems crashes and I get memory dump screen saying there is a problem with ntoskrnl.exe. It also usually says IRQL not lesser than or equal . Any ideas?

Windows 2000 SP-2
AK31 Version 3.1
Athlon 1.4 T-bird
1024 PC2100

How many sticks of memory comprise the 1gb your using?

I finally re-formated and did a fresh install of Win2k, the memory problem has gone away, Microsoft showed it to be a HAL problem, but a new one has come up now. For some reason at random times the computer re-boots. I have 400watt power supply and I think that should be enough. I have one HD, two CD Roms, a 80mm processor fan, two 80mm case fans, small fan on the AK31 MB, and small fan on the video card.

If you are using 4 sticks of RAM the only way to get stability is to use standard settings for your memory timings and also NOT overclock the fsb (keep it at 133MHz).

Workin' covered the memory issue, so if that's not the case, have you tried this?

Workin: I am using 4 sticks of RAM, set at 133

DAPUNISHER: I will disable that and see if it does it again.

Thanks,

BSOD came up, this is what it says:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Address 80431BA5 base at 80400000, Date Stamp 3ad7ad60- ntoskrnl.exe
Beginning dump of physical memory.

No pattern as when this happens, has done it 4 times in last 5 hrs.

Win2k sp2
1024 PC2100 (4X256) running at 133
AK31 Version 3.1
Athlon 1.4 (running at 108 degress)

Hmm, I have an AK31A with 4 sticks of 256MB and a 1.4 tbird, the only time I had any trouble was with aggressive memory timings and an overclocked fsb. I do have the tbird running a little overclocked (1466, 11x133) and was rock solid stable under Win2k, and have been completely stable (not a single crash) under Win XP.

Wish I could be more helpful...

At this point I suggest using fail-safe defaults in the bios first and if it continues to act up then remove 1 of the sticks and give it a go.

According to Microsoft the problem lies with a device driver conflict
Here are my IRQ's
0-system timer
1-Keyboard
3-Com2
4-Com1
6-Floppy drive
8-System Clock
9-Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
10-MPU-401 Compatable MIDI Device
12-Logitech Mouse
13-Numeric Data processor
14- Primary IDE
15-Secondary IDE
11-Advansys SCSI Host Adapter (this is for scanner)
11-Matrox G450 DualHead
11-US Robotics Modem
11-VIA AC97 Audio Controller
11-USB Host Controller
11-USB Host Controller
11-USB Host Controller

It appears to me that there are too many things on IRQ 11, but I am not to familiar with this.
Thanks for any ideas.

The things that jump out at me are:

11-Matrox G450 DualHead
11-US Robotics Modem
11-VIA AC97 Audio Controller

I thought you should always try to get modem and sound cards off the same IRQ. Then having those on the Video cards IRQ may be to much. Of course some guy here prolly has those three and much more together and is running fine. I am just saying those three jumped out at me.

Since I use satellite for internet I do not need the modem except for setup. I have disabled it in system properties to see if that might stop the problem. I should know something soon.

The system run fine for about an hour, then crashed 3 times within 10 min. I have now downloaded the latest VIA drivers from Shuttle web site and installed them. Waiting now to see what happens.

Major problems, found out there was new bios for the AK31, downloaded the bios, booted the computer with a win98 boot disk, swaped out disk for the one with the bios exe file. Program was running fine, looked like nearly done, then boom, all went dark, tried to reboot, no luck. Will not boot with boot disk, or any other way I have tried. Took out battery for 15 min, still does not boot. Never had a problem flashing bios before, but dont know what to do know. Anyone with any suggestions PLEASE help.
Thanks,
REX

Use a clean boot floppy, create an autoexec.bat file on it that runs the flash program using the proper command line switches and bios file name, and start the PC with that floppy in the drive.

Made a new 98 boot disk, but the new bios file will not fit on the same disk. If you boot the computer with the boot disk it appears to be booting up, just no video. After it seams to have boot I can put in the disk with the new bios and run the exe file and it runs, but cant see what its doing, and it still will not boot. Maybe if I could find the older bios and flash it back, but it no longer shows on the web site, just shows the new one.
Suggestions?

Downloaded old original bios and tried that. still no luck. Running blind with no video, but I dont remember having to do anything the first time except type in the exe file name and it did the rest. The programs seam to run, just nothing will work when its through running. grrrrr

bkdraft-

Do not use the win98 boot disk to flash your bios.... it loads too much into memory. You need a clean boot disk ala, format a:/ s
then load your flash program and new bios onto this.

Don't sweat the IRQ sharing, it's normal with win2k, read This I'm sorry to hear the flash went badly for you :( If you get it flashed and working again, I suggest you definitely remove a stick of memory and use the fail-safe default settings to see if the system stabilizes.

Well I give up, it will not recover, I am going to install the ECS board back in until I get something done about the AK31, either new bios or replacement board. Thanks for all the help, maybe it will go better next time.

In regards to irq sharing...most pci devices will share irq's fine. However, if you are not using the serial ports, diable them and free up IRQs3/4. Turn pnpOS to disable and set resources manually. Ideally, you should be able have video running on irq11 alone. 3,4,5 should be open for usb, modem, audio.

Try turning on (PNP OS) in the Bios, that fixed the problem for me. It seems to be limited to Win2K cause I had Win2k on a MSI K7Master and had that same problem.

Let me know if this helps.
