AIWA CDC-MP3 now available at Best Buy B&M

Has anybody noticed that the relatively cheap car CD receiver AIWA CDC-MP3 is now available at Best Buy? For those that don't know it should be the only one anywhere near available and under 300$ and supports MP3, CDRW and ID3 tags. My local one had two but were immediately sold out, but he promised more will be in this Friday in Champaign, IL.

Not exactly a hot deal but its there, none the less, if you neet to get your grubby little hands on it like I...

It was the standard 299, plus tax of course... Since its only B&M you proll cannot sure that 20$ off certificate for online purchases if anyone still has those... If they're all sold you you can always get a raincheck... (someone PLEEZ tell me why its called a raincheck)

In any case, I'd suggest waiting for their promos, like free car kit/install or something...

I'd say you're better off buying the new Philips CD-MP3 player...it's only $200, and, IMO, it's a better brand...

i ordered one from crutchfield back in may, it came mid august, I installed it two weeks ago. IT ROCKS. Just did a 6 hour drive on friday, one cd and didnt play everything. Drove another 3 and another 3 sunday and it remembered what had been played in random from two days before. You cannot tell the difference in quality between mp3 and cd when you're doing 70, so no complaints there. It does everything it says it does, burning cds with names is cake.

Only complaint - the random function does not cull songs from every album/directory on the disk but rather plays random from the album the player is currently in. Simple enough to avoid being annoyed: I just burn my cds without directorys now.

The price is worth it, the only comparable system is a kenwood for about 600$

(also the flip down face is hard to put back on, but i'm sure i'll get used to it.)

I have to agree with Iron Tek about Phillips being a better brand. AIWA is always flashy with all the bells and wistles but everything I've ever bought that was AIWA has broken. I think they must use cheap parts. I believe that Phillips is very popular in Europe. So even though were comparing apples and oranges as far as a car deck or a portable player, I just won't buy anything made by AIWA.

I ordered mine from Crotchfield in June, got it late August, installed it, returned it the next day. It, like 99% of Aiwa products, sucks @$$. The faceplate has to be the cheasiest pos I've ever seen, made out of the plastic from plastic straws. I'll give it credit to where it's due - you cant get another mp3 player for your car for that price, but then again the drive will die within a year or two or become faulty. If you want to waste your money on it go right ahead guys.

Doesn't AIWA make the head units for the low-end Alpine receivers?
I was thinking about getting this player, but want to read more reviews before i put down $300 on a novelty item.

Hmmm... I always thought Aiwa was pretty good, but then, that was a few years back and I haven't kept up... I really want something like this, so maybe I'll go for the service plan I suppose...

If you guys want a portable CD/MP3 player thats an alternative to the Genica at Compgeeks, Buy.com has the Ijam, though its backordered. With free shipping and 20 bucks off coupon, you pay 92 bucks, thouh it retails for 149...

Someday someone will make what we all really want...

A solid portable player, that plays cdr, cdrw & audio cds, with id, with quality builtin RF modulation, with working sufficient skip control, with user friendly controls, with real random, with the full gambit of power options and made by someone we can trust for a reasonable price. Someday.

yah aiwa is junk. Anyone with a decent stereo wouldn't put that low end junk in their car. shame. cause i need something like this. might have to get the kenwood excelon for like $435 or so(dealer cost).

aiwa is suck

Aiwa, isn't exactly top of the line but like ragingbitch said there aren't many other options out there except the $600 Kenwood. The reason Aiwa has such a high price is that they were the first out the gate and they can't keep em stocked so supply and demand comes into play here. I am in need of a new CD player for the wife's vehicle and have just been trying to hold off until I can pick up one with MP3 support, next year I'm sure that all mfrs will have MP3 support and of course the prices will go down. I may go the route a lot of others have and build an old PC and put it in my truck until then so I can bring my 15 CDR collection of 350 CDS I encoded though.

I bought the kenwood mp3 player. It doesnt support id3 tag but it does support 32 character file names. Not bad and i picked it up for 315. before they even hit stores. It was worth it. I enjoy it every single day. the z919 is surely a better choice and the new models coming out soon from kenwood will be around 350 or so. I would hold out on the old aiwa. I too agree, everything that i have bought from them has broken eventually.

jrichrds, there are a lot of websites out there of folks doing this, (one with some links is posted) and I don't know if I understand your question about skip control but if you are asking about how to keep this thing from skipping since I haven't built one yet I can only guess that it wouldn't be too bad unless you were running over speed bumps since most HDDs can take quite a bit of punishment, also a lot of folks are using latop HDDs whicah are even more "skip resistant".

gr8snakee, where did you get the Kenwood for $315?

MP3 car links

Does anyone know where I can pick up a Phillips Expanium? They are out of stock everywhere. Or does anyone have input on what portable mp3 disk player is good? They all seem to suck in some way or another

bCHICO, hope you bought some extended service thing at BB cuz AIWA is SuCk!! I had last years' top of the line model, the Aiwa 176-M or something like that, and the sucker's face plate broke on me in like two months. I am like so careful with that kinda stuff, and I can't believe it broke on me. What's more was that the player had a terrible skipping problem, (no i didn't lower my car or anything) and also when i took out the faceplate when i left the car the thing was HOT!! The terrible design from Aiwa R&D and too much features without the thought of quality over quantity makes me think twice of buying AIWA car stereos' again.

I guess the price isn't too bad, $300 bucks for a car MP3 player, but I rather get a portable one and you can lug it around anywhere. Personally, I am getting my Kenwood KMD-71, minidisc car player cuz of the lack of quality MP3 players out there at a kickass price. getting it for around 170.. boo yaah!

I tend to be swayed a little by gr8snakee; I don't imagine the quality of Aiwa to be as bad as certain people say, as I've owned a few, but its never a good idea to purchase first generation technology if you can hold off. A second gen Kenwood cd/mp3/car stereo for 350 sounds a lot more enticing than a first-gen Aiwa.

I do like one technology in the Aiwa though, its the only player to feature aux input under 2-300$...

Here's what I know about AIWA. I have a AIWA shelf system I bought about 7 years ago and I still use it....the CD player has gone out of allignment and so it doesn't play most discs but that has happened on every shelf system I have ever seen after about 5 years or so. I heard a while back that Sony had bought AIWA, taken the technology that they liked to use in their own products and left AIWA to be Sony's crappy cousin. I havn't bought an AIWA since then so I don't know about current quality but my NSX-3100 is certainly outstanding (especially for the price). I would tread with caution but don't let us deter you from getting a great deal. I might even get one of these myself (just don't tell my Alpine that I'm considering it).

about sony buying out aiwa... i think it has something to close like a 50% share in the aiwa corporation, so I would presume that it would have some influence, if sony wanted to, to force aiwa to create lower end products so as not to directly compete with sony products.
anyway, I bought an aiwa shelf system about 5 years ago.. cd is out of alignment, so it doesnt play most cds, and the woofers were worn out after about a year and a half, but I believe that also relates to the fact that a lot of shelf systems back then used really low quality woofer systems. I'm seeing a lot more rubber surrounds and polycarb cones these days...

anyway, I certainly wont attempt to say aiwa's really high quality or anything, but geez, only $300 for a car mp3 player? i mean, it looks DECENT. i think im gonna get one 🙂. i'll buy an extended warranty for insurance...
