For occasional play, paintball because serious play is REALLY expensive. I've never played Airsoft because there's no real Airsoft fields or players here. What I like about paintball is that you can see exactly who you shot by looking at the paint color. But paintball is only fun with rental players. When you have guys with thier own guns, all they do is hide in the back and shoot. No strategy there, but with rentals you need to use teamwork to continually advance and force people out of the back.

I've been playing for 5 years, I'm the president of the FSU Paintball Club, and I play tournaments. Does that answer the question?

I've owned WAY too many guns. My first was a Maverick Deluxe pump, then I moved to an Automag on CO2. From there, I moved up to a MiniMag on compressed air, and I've never gone back to CO2. I also own a 2002 Autococker and a 98 Custom with a Flatline. I'm working on getting an Evolution Cocker.

However, I've never played AirSoft. I'd like to try it. How far do the guns effectively shoot? How loud are they? How do you get guns if they're illegal?

~70 feet effective with stock (non upgraded) maybe ~100 upgraded. Not that loud...they're not illegal in most of the US. Its illegal in places like New York and washington DC for obvious reasons.

Okay, haven't had a chance to post until now, but I'll try to answer some of your guys' questions...

<< Airsoft looks like fun, and the guns absolutely rule, but I've got one question.... How do you know when you've shot someone? And don't tell me the "honor system" cause that doesn't work in real life. At least with paintball there's no arguing. I'd still rather get into Airsoft I think, as I've yet to buy either type of gun, but I know I want one or the other very soon. >>

Well, you're right, the honor system doesn't work in real life, but in real life, you don't need it since you're using real bullets. Paintball is for dishonest people who don't acknowledge when they've been hit unless they're covered in paint. That's why it works great as a rental sport. Airsoft is different in the fact that you only play with people who you trust, or people who have their own guns and have been playing for a while (thus meaning they have at least gained the trust of somebody.) If someone you invite blatantly doesn't acknowledge hits, you confront that person about it, and if they still refuse, you don't invite them to play again. Yeah, harsh, but a person like that can ruin the fun for the rest of the people playing.

<< Dang...it looks like it's right down to the last detail >>

Yeah, the guns are amazing, huh? To legally ship them into the US they must have no trademarks and orange paint on the barrel, but most people remove the paint arnd restore the trademarks.

<< To answer the question.. usually, there are refs, but otherwise.. you listen for a screech of pain? an ummmph. It really does come down to the honor system. >>

Never many screeches of pain in airsoft, unless someone shoots you with an upgraded sniper rifle (up to 600 fps) from a short distance, or anyone shoots you from within a few feet.

<< Doesn't look like it has burst though... >>

As far as I know, the only airsoft gun that has burst fire is the FA-MAS, which also has the highest rate of fire of any airsoft gun (and was one of the first on the market). Only the guns with burst as real guns have burst in airsoft, thus the realism factor again.

<< more airsofters! >>

If I could vote again, I would... :D

<< welts let ya know your alive.... Airsoft would be awesome but since NO one plays around my area. it's paintball for me.... >>

You should check the forums at airsoftzone.com to see if there are any players in your area. You might be surprised...where do you live?

<< However, I've never played AirSoft. I'd like to try it. How far do the guns effectively shoot? How loud are they? How do you get guns if they're illegal? >>

Stock AEGs shoot about 70 feet accurately. I know a guy that has a sniper rifle that he says gets one inch groupings at 200 feet. That of course is in a controlled situation - since the speed of the BB is so much slower than a bullet it is hard to adjust for wind when sniping, but it can be done if you know your rifle well enough. They are not loud at all, and some of the silenced ones (MP5 SD series, silenced AUGs, etc) can hardly be heard from 100 feet away. But, they all make a distinctive noise, and you can hear them. They are obviously not going to be as loud as real guns, and I seem to remember they are quieter than paintball guns, but I'm not sure on that. You can get guns from many different places on the internet, or there may be some local retailers in your area. Check out DEN Trinity for guns from Hong Kong, or if you want to buy them from a US retailer, check out Airsoft Extreme. Read above for legality issues.

So is it illegal or legal to have one? I can see not wanting to have one in your hand cause a cop might shoot you thinking it is real, but if it is in your trunk or something they will confiscate it?

so airsoft seems to be based on the honor system.

even if the guns are legalized, there probably wont be as commercialized as paintball since those that play it occationaly and rent the airsoft guns will cheat. (think teenage punks)

but in both airsoft + paintball, the general rule is "whoever shoots the most" wins :( ie: grain silo size ammo holder

btw-whatever happened to paintball? it seemed to have died down over the past few years

I would think that they would be illegal for people under 18 or 21 to have (or buy) but not operate....

Airsoft guns are legal to own, just like any other toy gun. When people are talking about cops confiscating the guns, it's because cops tend to do that when they think the gun is real. I am not absolutely sure, but I think to be legal the gun has to have the orange paint on the barrel, though. If the cops find it in your trunk, they can't confiscate it if it has the orange on the barrel, but there may be some overzealous cops out there who don't understand the concept of a toy gun, I don't know. I believe that anyone under 18 has to have parental permission to buy the gun.

The "whoever shoots the most wins" concept is not always true, and in fact I've found it to be untrue in many cases. I was told a story once about a guy who got nine kills in nine shots - a high-powered sniper rifle and a stupid team to shoot at that kept moving into the same spot. We also play with knife kills - if you're stealthy enough to sneak up on someone and "stab" them without them shooting you, you get a kill that way, too. Sometimes a shootout ensues, but that's understandable. Some people choose to use the standard magazines for their gun instead of the high capacity mags just for the realism, so they have less ammo than those with the hi-caps. I rarely run out of ammo when I play.

I'm going to vote paintball. I own both types of guns, and here is how I see it:

Airsoft:
-Harder to find games
-Much cheaper ammo
-flatter shots but less acurate (lighter ammo with less mass gets caught by the wind)
-full auto much more common
-bateries easier to deal with than Co2 or N2

Paintball:
-Hurts more (heavier ammo)
-shots arc more but more consistent
-expensive
-less realistic
-guns easier to upgrade

In both games sniping is not that realistic since you can almost always see a guy before you can tag him. Only some extremely upgraded airsoft guns with heavy aluminum coated bb's are worth getting scopes for.
