Airport extreme/Timecapsule vs other N router.

Looking at buying a new router due to new, much faster internet. We have both windows and OSX computers on the network.

I've been seriously considering an airport extreme or possibly even a timecapsule (kinda like the backup possibilities of it), but they are a bit more expensive than other options. I'm thinking Linksys/Cisco e3000 or several other possibilities from ASUS or Linksys. Does anyone have a good reason why I should or should not go with either option?

There are lots of good reasons to go with other richly-featured routers if you want such features, but be aware that only a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme will work with Time Machine. There may be unsupported workarounds, but in my experience they don't work well. If you want to use Time Machine I'd get an Airport Extreme and an external hard drive, so you don't have to replace the entire unit if the hard drive conks out.

There are plenty of supported non-Apple based Time Machine-capable servers. In fact, any out of the box NAS box will probably support it. My Infrant ReadyNAS from 2006 supports it and works flawlessly

I have two Airport Extreme routers sitting here on the floor. They would frequently drop connections and need to be rebooted. I never got more than a week out of one without having to reboot it. In my mind it's a POS. I bought two E3000's and put DD-WRT on them and have forgotten I even have them. Works all the time. I have never had to reboot them even once. I was going to sell the Airpor Extremes but I feel bad because I know I am selling someone a problem.

I have iMac, MacBook, and quite few Windows based Laptops, and Desktops.

While Apple Wireless clients work in their simple way with almost all Wireless Routers.

Windows under certain configurations do not make a good use of the Airport.

Apple is solid in it simplicity, but it is Simple.

Ergo, do not waste your money on Airport.

time capsule and airport cheap on cowboom. they had a 1tb time capsule on special for $119 - the time capsule can backup multiple mac's so if you have a mac family. it is indeed a special router. even more so than air port extreme even though you may think it is the same thing.

backing up over wifi makes every one suffer 😉
