If you ever ride American airlines, in the back of the American way magazine, there are specs on what speeds the different planes in the fleet fly at

What type of commerical airplane? Hell an old C-47 can be considered a commerical aircraft.

The speeds do vary a bit...

The 747 flies at about 550 mph while a 737 generally flies at about 530 mph.

Minor difference of course, but it is there...

Have I become the resident ATOT Aviation Expert? ;)

Hmm, maybe that could be my custom title? :D

In any case, they all fly at different speeds. The 767 also flies at 530 mph. Believe it or not, the 747 is still the fastest commerical airliner in the world. Even more so because the new 747-400ER flies at 570 mph. Not a lot faster, but a bit faster and it burns far less fuel than the older 747-200 series which is still in heavy use around the world. The Airbus A380 will actually fly a bit faster, at about 585 mph, but it remains to be seen if it will make more money than a 747-400 on the same route.

BTW, did you know Boeing has delivered more than 1,400 747 series airplanes? That is a lot of VERY big airplanes to sell, not to mention the thousands upon thousands of smaller airplanes they have sold. The 747-400ER can fly 9,000 miles without refueling. That is far enough to fly from New York direct to Hong Kong. That is also just about as far as you would ever want to fly a plane.

There is talk about making a 777-300ER that will have a similar range to the 747-400ER, but cost less to operate per seat. Boeing has tossed the idea out there, but with the airline business the way it is, not much demand for new $200 Million airplanes right now.

I'm a pilot, I fly airplanes for fun and helicopters for a living. I love aviation and all things flying, so I read up on all this stuff in my spare time. :D

did some testing on the bulkheads for the boeing 777, that's a huge plane, this part is one of the main structural components, when fully machined, the average SEVEN YEAR OLD girl can pick this piece up, enjoy your filght.......:D
