Airbag recall - sounds pretty serious

I'm confused. Some of these cars date back to 2001 and now all of a sudden in 2014 this is news?

Airbags only work in a accident and even then in certain conditions. They had to piece together all the defects that happened and then the company that made them tried to cover much of it up.

As said the 60-80 bad per million seems very low.

why would any ATOTer have cars that old? eww

i have 2 of the cars on that list but later models. wifeys corolla just made it out.

I've driven in what looks like an affected Corolla and Civic. Don't own anything on that list though. Yay me.

I should probably be more concerned about the GPS I usually drive with infront of me and my sunglasses that would probably get mashed into my eyes if I hit an airbag.

Looks like my 2011 Civic is good to go, as well as my parents' Rav and brother's Mazda3. Yikes though, quite the recall.

EDIT: I forgot about my previous car, a 2007 Civic. That one just missed the recall list, but I did get in an accident with it (though the airbag didn't deploy, for some weird reason. The car was easily totaled and I hit the car in front of me).

Coworker's M3 is on the list so he called about it and they said they it's old news and his airbag was replaced the last time it was in the shop. So, YMMV.

What fascinates me, is why this has become such an issue NOW?? 😵😵

Honda announced they would be doing a voluntary recall of many car models because of these exact defects in airbags back in May and added additional models in both June and July.
They also made it clear that they the numbers were massive and it would take some time for airbag replacement production to ramp up to meet the demand.

The total list of Honda models has been available since mid-July.
Honda has been fixing them without waiting for the recall letter at my local dealership for some time now.
Both of my Honda's were involved and are now fixed. 😀
Wait time was less than a week from when I went to the dealership, (without a recall letter) so that they could order the correct airbags, until they were replaced.
Of course, for those that don't know, you can go to ANY dealership, anywhere to have them fixed (at least in the US).

So I guess the media just needed a slow day for this almost 6 month old news to become important?? 🙄
