BEAVERTON, Ore. - It?s gotta be the shoes, right?

No other basketball shoe has changed the face of business, athletics and marketing like the Air Jordan. This month, Nike releases the 23rd edition, and it is expected to be just as venerated as its predecessors.

The sleek design and link to Michael Jordan?s jersey number make it a touchstone in the line. It?s also Nike?s first basketball shoe designed under its ?Considered? ethos, which aims to reduce waste and use environmentally friendly materials wherever possible.

The Air Jordan XX3 will be released in three hyped-up rounds from January to February, starting with a limited edition to be sent to only 23 retailers to be sold for $230 and concluding with the national launch at $185.

There had been talk at Nike about retiring the shoe at No. 23, because of his iconic jersey number. But company officials won?t say whether this will be the last of the line. Neither will Jordan.

?You?ll just have to wait and see,? Jordan said in an e-mail to The Associated Press, responding to questions about the upcoming release.

Before launching the first shoe in 1985, Nike had just signed Jordan for $2.5 million over five years. Nike won?t say what Jordan?s current contract with the company is worth.

Dam I wouldn't pay $50 for those things, never mind $230. That is one ugly sneaker.

I would spend $150 on a pair of athletic shoes if they were of superior quality or had the right support, but they'd be for running, not for "looking good". And they wouldn't be these, either.

I run a lot, so I don't mind spending more on a decent pair of shoes, but never more than $150, and never for something as ugly as these things.

i've spent well over $100 on multiple pairs of athletic shoes (basketball mainly). it sucks but you're paying for the brand and the design, both of which are important to me. it feels good to look good on the court, field, or wherever.

jordan xi is probably my favorite basketball shoe ever and even though i haven't been a huge fan of recent jordan's, i'll probably get the xx3's at somepoint, hopefully in carolina blue.

I spent over $100 on my Brooks running shoes.. but I wouldn't spend that much on any other type of shoe besides some leather-soled dress shoes.

Reminds me of a short story I read, where some established shoe company was designing their new lineup, with the idea of selling a grand total of 10 pairs, and shooting every single person who bought them...thus fostering the idea that these were extraordinarily rare and desirable, and driving the market CRAZY.

$185 minimum for a pair of jordans, whack. At least make em look good.
Now that I think of it all Jordan sneakers were ugly as sin. Back when I was in school these were the sneakers the cool kids had to have.

As longhornlump said, I don't think AT really has an idea of how ridiculous sneaker pimps get over sneakers.
They mostly go nuts over vintage sneakers and pay top dollar. $200+ for a particular pair of vintage sneakers would be a low price.
