Air ioniser as fan for heatsinks

Air ionisers have been promoted as being health products for some time now, but I see very little data regarding how much air they can move and at what static pressure. I'm guessing "not very much" in both cases, but who knows, I could be wrong.

So, has anyone seen one of these used to cool fin arrays/heat sinks/etc.? For what it's worth, the Asus N51Vf has one in it, but I'll be darned if I know how much (or if) it keeps the thing cool.

They tend to degrade rubber and various things, I'm sure it would be a bad plan probably.

No clue in reality here, but it just sounds a bad idea to me IMHO.

Possibly. I've seen it discussed before in that general vein, but nobody ever brought up the air flow rate typical of consumer-level air ionisers.

It appears that commercially-available ionisers that can run off a wall socket peak at around 15-20 cfm with no appreciable static pressure. Unless you believe that inventgeek guy in '06 who claimed 325 cfm from a homebrew ioniser. Seems unlikely.

I may have to end this particular inquiry.

You could pick up a pair of used Hill Plasmatronics off ebay for probably under 5K. Then mount your CPU directly in front of the plasma tweeter and blast some ionizing tunes at 110+ dB. Of course after 5 minutes your CPU will overheat and you'll be nauseous from the plasma ions, but what a great way to re-purpose a pair of 80s audiophile speakers that should never be used indoors. ;-)

Hah! That "sounds" like a horrible idea. Brilliant!

Some time ago, I was talking to some local merchant or employee about the dust-control problems of computers. With a wry grin, he suggested using one of those "bug-zapper" devices to vaporize the dust, or may it was a feature of certain air cleaners.

That -- too -- would seem a bad idea.
