I don't think it's a question of whether they'll turn it down so much as whether they should go in the first place. Flying to the UK could both be risky and look bad in its own right. How dare they fly internationally during a pandemic, likely using private or luxury aircraft, and so on.

Well you are only supposed to have up to 30 mourners at a funeral in the UK from 12 April (15 at the moment) so it'll be interesting to see what happens then!
 
To heck with it, I'm gonna risk the wrath of royalists (I suspect not a numerous group on here - so I'm probably not being that brave - but there's also the likely larger group who merely adhere to the rule of 'never speak ill of the dead')

He was a remarkably unremarkable man, notable largely for his intensely stupid and tedious racism (for which he was endlessly indulged and forgiven by our obsequious media). Very much from the anti-intellectual huntin'-and-shootin' school of uninteresting aristos.

He made a demonstrably poor job of raising his children, all of whom have grown up with obvious behavioural issues and personality problems. And, though in fairness, he was constrained by his background and circumstances, he never visibly made the slightest effort to transcend or get beyond those limitations. His only achievement was to stay alive a long time, and that's just the usual workings of demography - the more privileged you are, generally the longer you live. He never mastered the basic skill of politeness and knowing when to keep quiet, that are his consort's only identifiable talents.

I can appreciate it. I'm sure plenty of Brits are willing to mourn Prince Philip, but the BBC and the government as a whole had a "you must mourn everywhere, at all times" mindset. I still remember that one video clip of seeing in-memoriam graphics on highway displays... you're not even allowed a respite on the way home!

He was 99, in fairly poor health and frankly I have dealt with corpses that looked healthier than him. Him passing away was expected to happen so I think that's why everyone is rolling their eyes at the coverage.

Wow, anyone look at the ceremonial garb (at first I thought they were dressed as court jesters) some of the royal personnel and church hierarchy had on. Several people could retire on the amount of money spent on gold embroidery on that crap. Hopefully, after this queen is gone, the British may think seriously about what a Fn parasitic waste non-functioning royalty is.

Wouldn't count on it. Prince Charles is next in line, and he'll have a lot of public support. That and I imagine a lot of the expenses you see on display happened decades ago.

For a long time people were saying he should be skipped in favour of William because he’s such an insufferable idiot.

He's better than some give him credit for — I'm thinking things like his environmental activism. As it stands, I look at it this way... even if his mother passed away overnight, we might not have King Charles as long as we would King William.

I recall a few years ago when Charles spoke out about dilapidated condition of many of the Crown Properties (these are rental properties owned and leased out by the royal family, not places the royals plant their own personal butts) admitting that the royals were the biggest slumlords in Britain. Queenie told him to shut up and count the money.

It feels like we're edging closer and closer to royals who aren't enamored with the concept. Prince Harry clearly, but even Prince Charles is much more a product of the modern world than the Queen. Not necessarily the end of the monarchy at this rate, but it could be less officious and pretentious than it has been.

So long as he can keep the property and the money maybe. This is the guy who has a special sitting pillow and if he drops something he gets a servant to pick it up. Allegedly anyways.
