AIM trace question

i know this might be in the wrong forum, but i am not getting any real answers in the networking forums.

i got a bunch of weird IMs and emails last night from someone seeking information on someone else. i am wondering if it's possible to trace the IPs on both the IMs and the emails. does anyone know if this can be done?
