You can try going into -
- preferences --> sign on/off --> click the connection button ---> auto configure

That will look for open ports that AIM works on. Otherwise your admin locked down the firewall and you are hosed.

Its called proxy my friend. I don't use AIM - but if it has a setting to use an outside proxy, that should get past the inside proxy.

Java based AIM

I wouldn't normally post with a workaround, but as a sys admin myself I am almost certain that they're not blocking AIM to prevent you from chatting, but rather as a security precaution because of all the exploits and ability to transfer unencrypted documents.

If your IS department cared more about the chatting part, then you wouldn't be able to get to these forums either (web filtering).

So what do you do at work? What is your job title?

Gaim wasn't working either. I think it was the port blocking. I'm using the aimexpress now.

Thanks!

Ever stop to think there is a reason they blocked it?

But if you MUST be on it, with aim you can simply change the port it uses under the connection settings to 80 (the default port for web browsers) and it will work.

This is working as well. Let's see how long it holds up. If not, I can always go back to the java aim.

Short of them packet-sniffing or changing the default web browser port to some sort of firewalled and secured one, I don't think they will ever notice you doing this.

Works all the time when I'm at school.
