AIM behind a router - direct connect

so how do you send images, talk, and all the other stuff behind a router? if it has to do with the ports, which ones do i open up?

I jst wanted to say that I have a router, and I still can direct connect. Only once has it not worked, and after my friend re logged on I connected. I have the SMC Barricade 4 port 10/100 Mbps Broadband Router (SMC7004ABR) and I use SBC Global DSL service...

the times you cannot direct connect is when there are TWO routers, one on each side of the connection. if the other people dont have routers, it doesnt matter if you have one.
