I too use gaim. My only gripe is with it not being able to direct connect (AIM) or receive files (thru AIM).
Forward port 5190 and you're good to go.

I've been using GAIM for a while now and love it. Only gripe I have about it is that it crashes every couple of days. My buddy list will go blank and I have to close/reopen to get it back.

I love Trillian Pro. I have used Gaim and Miranda, the inferfaces are hard to navigate. I have several AIM accounts (personal and work) Trillian Pro allows me to open several AIM accounts online at once Gaim does not allow it.

yes, that's the downside of gaim.

i have gaim running on my desktop computer and it disconnects more frequently than deadaim, probably since it's a 3rd-party app and its connection to the AIM server isn't as stable. deadaim is a much more reliable program since it installs itself over the regular aim client so there are very few disconnections.

You can still find AIM 5.2.3292 on the net, I've never liked any version since, and never liked any of the AIM alternatives. Then just add these to the hosts file
127.0.0.1 ar.atwola.com
127.0.0.1 ads.web.aol.com
127.0.0.1 ads.aol.com
127.0.0.1 VTOT.proxy.aol.com

I never minded the ads in the past, but ever since they included sounds that was the last straw, nobody can stand them.
