Isn't science great? Imagine the day when all STDs are prevented. I wonder how long it will take to get this out on the market...

(Unfortunately, it might mean bad news for religious zealots, who like to point out that STDs are punishment for sins. It would make arguments like "abstinence is the only way to prevent stds useless, just like their morality-fascism". Hmmmm... science... or zealotry? Which one has done more for me...

from reading the article, i don't think there would be an out to market for the vaccine, if you can call it a vaccine. It sounds like they have found a per person way to stopping HIV in it's tracks. Using the persons own cells and the persons HIV.

And it still wouldn't stop ARC's that are the reason most aids patients die, unless i just missed that part. So it would be a way to fight HIV in those already infected, just like valtrix for herpes, it's not prevention, just treatment.

but good news, none the less
 
the reason why it's a per person basis is because it's a virus, and therefore there is no one cure all treatment

not just yet, once we get into quantum computing and mechanics, it might be possible

That's just it, there will never be a "cure" because there is no sustained profit for the developing drug companies. When was the last cure for anything developed?
 
Great news. HIV is challenging (I did some technical work for a company (can't disclose due to NDA) that was working with HIV) because it mutates so fast. I saw blots/gels that hybridized one day, but the next day, almost half of the signal was gone due to changes in the genome. That is simply astounding.

Sounds like that team is having better luck than we did 🙂

This is a pretty sweet discovery, I wonder how expensive this is. Anyone have any figures? If it's relatively cheap this could save Africa.

i believe the paralyzed woman walking was only proof of principle as far as adult stem cells go, but you were VERY active in applauding the fact that adult stem cells were able to cure paralysis


but yes, the virus shouldn't be contracted in the first place. but what about those people that had blood transfusions and got various diseases? are you a christian scientist also?
 
Are you comparing someone who contracted the virus through no fault of their own from a blood transfusion with someone who contracted the virus from engaging in risky behavior?

The results seem encouraging, but as the researchers point out, they are only proof of principle.

 
regardless of how the person contracted the disease, they deserve to be able to rid themselves of it. to think otherwise would be un-christian like, right?


i agree with you on the proof of principle, but it seems highly likely that a permanent treatment will be found, there's profit to be made! 😉

i don't think so, but i guess that's why it's a vaccine and not a cure. that's why it's important to get treatment EARLY

but the hiv cells dropped by 80%, and by 90% after one year
