If you had to pick which cure was to be found, which one would you pick?

Assuming you would be able to give a pill to anyone infected and they would be instantly cured and it would never return

cancer, because aids/hiv can be prevented but cancer can hit just about anyone

I would say cancer simply because of the fact that HIV/AIDS could be stopped with enough preventative measures.

AIDS/HIV: We know the manner of transmission and can, in some way, limit the spread of the disease through education.
Cancer: AFAIK we don't even know the manner of transmission, IIRC the actual "cause" of cancer, who gets it, is still a mystery.

Seems like an easy choice to me.

Many types of cancer can be too, such as skin cancer, lung cancer, throat cancer etc. Well, risks can be greatly reduced.
Cancers can also be treated (mostly) if caught soon enough, HIV/AIDS will always require drug treatments, as they won't go away once you have them.

Cancer ... affects damn near everyone. If it was cured, all the resources could then be put towards AIDS.

Cancer, because it'll require probably 500 different cures.

the cure for skin cancer isn't normal going to cure bowel cancer.

I don't care about retarded africans who die because they won't listen to the preventative measures we know about. Cancer is pretty much random, and having lost loved ones from cancer, I'd rather see that cured.

What a difficult choice.

A real "cure" for AIDS would be a breakthrough in viral treatment, and would extend far beyond AIDS.

Not to mention AIDS is a younger disease, more likely to strike at the prime of one's life and leave orphans than cancer is. Cancer is primarily a late life disease.

I want both... and I could never make such a choice.

Try more like 10%, dumbass.

Large variations exist between individual countries. In some African countries, the epidemic is still growing despite its severity. Others face a growing danger of explosive growth. The sharp rise in HIV prevalence among pregnant women in Cameroon (more than doubling to over 11% among those aged 20-24 between 1998 and 2000) shows how suddenly the epidemic can surge.

National HIV prevalence rates vary greatly between countries. In Somalia and Gambia the prevalence is under 2% of the adult population, whereas in South Africa and Zambia around 20% of the adult population is infected.

In four southern African countries, the national adult HIV prevalence rate has risen higher than was thought possible and now exceeds 24%. These countries are Botswana (37.3%), Lesotho (28.9%), Swaziland (38.8%) and Zimbabwe (24.6%).

West Africa is relatively less affected by HIV infection, but the prevalence rates in some countries are creeping up. In west and central Africa HIV prevalence is estimated to exceed 5% in several countries including Cameroon (6.9%), Central African Republic (13.5%), Côte d'Ivoire (7.0%) and Nigeria (5.4%).

Until recently the national prevalence rate has remained relatively low in Nigeria, the most populous country in sub-Saharan Africa. The rate has grown slowly from 1.9% in 1993 to 5.4% in 2003. But some states in Nigeria are already experiencing HIV prevalence rates as high as those now found in Cameroon. Already around 3.6 million Nigerians are estimated to be living with HIV.

HIV infection in Eastern Africa varies between adult prevalence rates of 2.7% in Eritrea to 8.8% in Tanzania. In Uganda the countrywide prevalence among the adult population is 4.1%.

Because of the preventability of AIDS I voted for the cure for cancer, b/c short of getting it from a blood transfusion i know I won't be getting AIDS, but I'll probably end up w/ cancer based on my family history.
