Aid to New Orleans

Aside from Hugo Chavez in Venezula, have any other leaders or coutries stepped up to help? Not necessarily with money or materials, but especially with search and rescue?

I stepped up and donated money towards the relief effort. I think a lot of people can spare a bit and that bit will become a lot when its all said and done.

We are the richest country in the world we don't really need money although I'm sure others will step up and help

The point of the question wasn't supposed to be money, but specialized search and rescue teams and equipment, dogs, sensitive sound equipment, nurses and physicians might actually save lives, and in a week that probably won't be so.

Think about the response to the Russian sub that was stuck. It wasn't about money; it was about time.

Canadian Government Ministries and Private Aid Agencies have offered help, bu so far few have received any response to their offers. I see that a local(Vancouver) S&R crew are now packing to head out to NO(edit update: they are ready, but waiting for the Go from the US Goverment).

I understand that some News channels in the US asked a similar question as you have and were berating the inaction of the International community. Just know that many have offered help and are willing, but no help will come without the US Government asking or accepting the offered help.

The offer, whether accepted by the current regime or not, is appreciated by your southern neighbors. Thanks.

Chirac and the Queen of England(CoW's favorite 😉 ) have offered condolences, though I think Chirac also offered assistance(not sure, kinda missed part of the report).

Um ... the US is the richest nation on earth with the greatest number of millionaires, billionaires, multinational corps and you are asking for "aid" from other coutntires?? LOL - silly yankee, trix are for kids...

Haven't you heard? Our spending is out of control and the economy is in the crapper too, and has been since the very day Bush took office. We need all the help we can get.

Guess it's time to raise taxes on those zillionares. Good suggestion!

after we snubbed them all what do we expect?

seriously though, most other countries (ie the ones we helped after the tsunami) are still rebuilding and they view us as rich enough to handle things ourselves.

I like the comment someone sent in to CNN that they then read on the air. It was something along the lines of "I hope other countries help us, even the French, but they probably won't since they are French." It was just great stuff.

Good summary, thanks Sandorski.

I'm astounded by folks who apparently do not read messages before posting. Napalm, I think I suggested that specialized search and rescue, doctors, nurses, etc. could save lives in imminent danger. You've seen the pictures of people trapped under the roofs of flooded homes? Just for a moment, try to put yourself in their place. Do you think that's about money?

Or do you think its about having a heart?

Looks like you missed the point (or perhaps its right on top of your head...)

I'm not suggesting raising taxes - what I am suggesting is before you start looking into other peoples backyards for aid, perhaps you should look in your own. I see that several drug companies, MLB and the NBA have all kicked in sizeable amounts of money. Now all we need to see is some of the US CEO who make millions annually to give some back in aid before you go outside your country with cap in hand.

Who cares?

We're rolling around in money for the relief effort.

It's just that there's no organization and no leadership for the relief effort. The "effort" has been a complete disaster.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard today pledged 10 million dollars to go with some emergency assistance that has yet to be specified.

The first request for international help came from the US goverment late Thursday. Sweden has had a team standing by for a couple of days now (and has informed OFDA of that) but has not yet received any direct requests, they can not leave until they know what kind of equipment and personell to bring.

I realize that Sweden is a small country and we have limited resources so we are probably not on the top of the list, but I suspect the situation is the same in most countries. There are teams in many countries standing by but they need to know what to do and where to go.

I can assure you that Sweden, and all European countries, will send as much help as we can.
