Autonomously controlled Nano Bots with AI would worry me more than a lot of things, like in the Day the Earth stood still remake, much as I disliked the movie.

AI hooked into wireless networks to nanbots, and the ability to instantly improve the network and them, and an endlessly expandable exponentially learning curve upon self awareness. Things could go haywire fast.

Can they really be much worse than we are to each other already?

I am excited to see more powerful and a more realistic AI to come up. I think it's going to end in the opposite direction, and really help humanity solve major problems. Well at least until some asshole gets a hold of it and use it to screw over everyone else.

have talked about nanorobots with other people before at least a few times

Yes, all mammals do have a neocortex and mammals are relatively new on the evolutionary scale. The animalistic aggression for survival and competition that Hawking speaks of with AI is much older than mammals and birds.

seems to me that there is not much difference between any tetrapods
