Well I'm close to a descision. Right now it's looking like I'm going to get an Athlon FX system.

So far I have the following in mind.

COOLER MASTER ATC-201B-BXT Case
SilverStone Tech. 400W Power Supply Model SST-ST40F
Leadtek K8NW ATX Motherboard for AMD Opteron/Athlon 64 FX
AMD Athlon 64 FX51
Transcend PC2700 1GB DDRAM ECC (x4)
POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 9800XT
Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu Aluminum + Copper CPU Cooler

I think this will make a pretty kickass system and hopefully enable me to do what I've been trying to achieve.

Why the hell are you buying PC2700? You need PC3200 with that rig.

And are you sure that Zalman is going to fit? Not gonna whack any of the transistors around the socket?

If it's got a VIA chipset the you should wait for a better chipset, unless you want to beta test.

please point me to where I can buy PC3200 registered memory. Newegg doesn't carry it and that where I'm getting most of my parts from.

Both these motherboards have the Nvidia chipset. I was hoping someone had actually used one of them or knew something about them.

Concerning the Leadtek motherboard, this was posted on newegg

"RAM: 4 x 184-pin DDR DIMM sockets for up to 8GB memory PC2700/PC2100/PC1600 DDR SDRAM registered DIMMs (Athlon FX processor supports PC3200)"

Does this mean that if you put in an Opteron your max speed memory is PC2700 and if you use a FX, then it's 3200?

It may as the processor has the memory controller now not the mobo. So instead of having a chipset that supports PC3200, you now need a cpu that does.

yes

the Opteron can only officially support up to PC2700, the FX can support PC3200

Thanks X-Man but I need 1GB modules. I am putting in 4GB of DDR. So far I've only ever found 2700 sticks.
Still that will be faster for what I need to do that 2GB of 3200.

Hmm, maybe I should look at the Opteron again. Tyan seem to make a nice board that can hold 12GB of RAM I think.

Heck I don't know. Too many choices.

Looks like a good choice to me :)

Hey you could put in the 1gb and send me the money you wanna spend on that 4gb and send it to me and I can build a whole brand new pc:p

But seriously, what are you using this pc for?

Your system choices arent making any sense.

If you're building some sort of high-end workstation/server and need 4gb of ram, then why are you using an FX processor? And if youre building a gaming rig, then why are you buying so much ram?

Probably because an Athlon FX is a lot cheaper than an Opteron (Like $400 cheaper IIRC).

Have a read of my other thread concerning why I am going for 4GB of RAM. It's not too hard to find. Going to a dual Opteron is a lot more money but something I have thought about. Tyan look like they have some nice boards, but it's something that's a bit too much for me right now. So far I believe the system I mentioned above will be excellent.
