this morning i woke up at 5:30am
booted up my computer and tried get on the internet
i repeat: TRIED TO GET ON THE INTERNET
nothing happened
i thought maybe my roadrunner service was just flaking out so i tried to connect via dial-up......nothing......grrrrrrr
then notice something weird on my desktop
right next to the mycomputer icon, there was an out of place icon (white box with a red X)
wtf is that?
it wasn't there when i shutdown my computer
so ran Innoculate to search for virus......no viruses were found but i haven't updated the program in over a month
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
checked my other programs and everything seemed to be working properly
but fvck....i'm going to die without the internet
i'm networked to 2 other computers
woke up my roomate at 7:30 and asked her to get online
she couldn't do it
ahhhhhhhhhhhh....one of my roomates might have gotten a virus and passed it to all of us

how do i diagnose and solve the problem
what steps do i need to take?
is it really a virus?
help

I'M A FREAK AND I NEED MY ANANDTECH!!!!
....posting from work right now

sorry to hear that happen but anyways...it is possible that it is a virus...what kind of antivirus are u running?
and for that white box with the red x...might be someone trying to hack into your comp.
try putting up a firewall or install zonealarm, then you can log what kind of activity is going on between your comp. and the outside world. not a comp. good luck...tell me how things go!

Download the latest definitions at work, then go home and load them in and re-scan.

Sorry, doesn't ring a bell here.

Like Tauren said, if you can get a virus update for Innoculate from a different computer and try to see if that helps.

What are you using as a router/firewall?

As was also suggested, I'd get a copy of Zonealarm and see if you've got some unwarranted traffic going on.

Might want to call RR and see if they're having any problems.

i'm networked via a 4 port linksys cable/etherfast router
bah.....roomate probably passed on the virus
when i get home i will disconnect my network and attempt to clean each computer separately

grrrrrrrrr....first they eat my food
and now they give me a virus

i'll get them back

You will have to wait until I have been rejected before you can ask her out. Now get back in line.:p

How immature...we all know that whoever can help kei will be the next one on line. :D

That white box with a red x sounds like a dead image. If you have Active Desktop and your background uses images online, then that is probably the origins of the red x thingy - especially since it's next to My Computer, which I assume is the upper left on your computer.

Have you used dial-up since using ZoneAlarm? Take down ZoneAlarm before trying dial-up (of course, after seeing if there are any strange network activity). I know BlackIce was causing problems for someone hear at work.

Hopefully, this boils down to just a dead cable connection.

I'll try to figure out more reasons......now, about dinner.... ;)
