Alright, I have a question, as I am writing a response up to a potential employer right now. One of the questions asked is my salary requirements for the position. However in the description prior to the question, the recruiter has already stated a range.

My question is, do I vaguely answer the question with something open ended such as "I am certain that based on the salary range you have quoted for the position that we will be able to agree on a final number"? Or so I bluntly state that I am looking for $X (which would fall in the upper end of the bracket quoted)? Or do I oversell myself and ask for the high end and then some?

rofl i hate that question too. I just go "40-50k" now. But, then again, I've never got a job where they asked for salary requirements haha.

Ask for a higher number, they'll counter with a lower, and you'll agree on someting in the middle.

Not really, since I was provided with a specific range, but then asked anyway. Their range is comfortably within market average for the position and area.

So I guess I'll be specifically vague then.

Just put in what you think you're worth and what you'll be happy making without looking greedy.

Always aim high, because ultimately they will lowball you. Just so long as you don't throw something out that's beyond reason, they'll work with it.

I tend to soft pedal things.

"The job is much more important to me than the salary, but I believe that I am marketable in the $XX,XXX range."

That shows to an interviewer that I know the value of my skills but also that I'm not motivated strictly by the money.
