AHHH, why don't people look in their damn blind spot!!

A lot of the SUV/Truck people also have the belief that you will see them and stop to allow them to go. I have heard this same paraphrase more than once "I don't have to worry, they have to worry about me, I won't be hurt at all."

That's the mentality we are dealing with. I am an advocate of moving SUVs and larger pickups into a separate licensing and taxed category or even requiring proof of valid 'need'. They really require a different skill set to drive and also cause many problems when parked and driven around many shopping type areas were parking lots are tiny and turns are tight and they do not want to yield right of way or be courtious (I am sure everyone has had a turning truck try and force them to reverse, instead of the truck allowing you to go first and get out of their way).

it's not your fault of course but you're an idiot if you think there are no idiots around you

Glad to hear you are OK. Sorry about your car.

I've been run off the road by people who don't look before changing lanes.

I hope the cops found him at fault and that he has insurance.

I'm such a moron, I didn't call the cops at the site of the accident. I was shocked at the time, didn't think it through and he was in a hurry to be somewhere. I got his contact/insurance info, which checked out earlier today.

I know you realize this already for this instance, but ALWAYS ALWAYS call the cops, even if it's just a scratch. In CA at least you have to report all accidents with >=$500 worth of damage, which on most cars now is basically any damage at all. Plus, it'll bite you in the ass later if you haven't established fault before you discuss it with the insurance companies. Too bad if the other person is in a hurry, they shouldn't have hit you.

Of course if they're in a hurry after you hit THEM, then skip the whole cop part. 😛 Somehow I doubt that would ever happen though.

It'd be nice if there were different/stricter licensing for larger vehicles but that'll never happen. Supposedly there's talk in the auto industry about making SUV and trucks more *compatible* with traditional cars with things like better matching bumper heights and stuff.

Matching bumper heights would be nice. In my only at fault accident, I rear-ended some SUV with a Dodge Omni. It's bumper was about the same level as the edge of my hood. I barely bent the corner of it's bumper and it almost totaled my car. Can't recall how much the repairs were exactly but it was very borderline (somewhere like in the $2500-3500 range for a car with probably $4000 at the time).

If our bumpers had lined up properly I'm sure the damage would've been minimal.

there was a thread about a week ago about adjusting side mirrors so that you don't have a blind spot. Everyone should read that shiet. I was constantly looking over my shoulder before, which actually can be quite hazardous in mid-high traffic areas. With properly adjusted mirrors I reckon most sedans shouldn't have any blind spots.

Worked for me, it can work for you. I guarantee it and it's only 3 easy payments of 19.95.

That's so helpful.

As some other people have pointed out, in certain situations, you can't avoid being in someone's blind spot at times. Besides, this genius cut across two lanes and nailed OS. You can't depend on your mirrors to cover your ass when changing lanes. ALWAYS look over your shoulder and make sure you're clear.

With stock mirrors most vehicles will have blind spots, the little convex mirrors you stick on your own can help....you should still always look over. Many people check mirrors and bank on no one being there or if someone is, they blame them for being in the blindspot.

The biggest problem here is the guy changed two lanes at once, many states have laws against double lane changes. He probably didn't care though and was thinking "here come my big truck, it smash you no stop, smash smash truck"
