Stay calm and show that you are to the instructor. Parallel park slowly so that you don't jerk back IF you hit the curb accidentally. They don't time you on this, so take your time, but not too much.

It was a piece of cake... as long as you stay calm and relaxed.

All other usual stuff apply:
- seat belts
- turn signals
- speed limit
- 2 hands on the wheel
- turn on the heat for the test-person if it's cold outside. :D

Heh... whats the speed limit for residential again?
Likely 30mph, could be 40mph or even 15mph... just gotta look for the signs... it would help if you knew the area a bit already...

NP... take it from a man who failed the written test but passed the road test easily. ;) Not reading the book for the written part was a mistake... everyone I've told has ridiculed me about failing that... but hey... I passed it 15 minutes later... still without looking at the manual. :D

make sure you look both ways at a stop sign even if there is no other road on one of your sides. Also, when your pulling our of the parellel parking spot, put your signal on and look over to your left to make sure there are no cars coming even though you know there will be no car there. Those are the two things I got points deducted for.

just remember pulling out of the parking lot, floor it and turn the wheel fast wile continueing to hit the gas, then slam on the breaks. it will get you off on the right foot.

Good luck!! Remember *some* of road rules when you are out there driving on your own with your driver's license. Most people on the road nowadays remember *none* of the road rules that they learned when they were in driver's education. :(

The best thing you can do is get to the place early and then drive around the nearby neighborhood for 30 minutes. That way you can spot things that might trip you up - hidden bumps, one way streets, stop signs that are concealed, sudden and seemingly pointless drops in speed limits, etc.

Here are reasons my friends and family have failed (I passed on my first attempt)
1) My wife was driving 25 in a 25 mph zone. She saw a 30 mph sign far up the road and decided to speed up to 30 mph. Well legally it is 25 until you pass the sign. She failed.
2) My sister failed for doing a very common thing. You legally must stop BEFORE the crosswalk and stay stopped before it. She was turning left at a light. There were cars in the way so she stopped before the crosswalk. Then she inched her way forward (which I bet 99% of drivers illegally do) until she was stopped basically in the middle of the intersection. Then she turned left when she had the chance.
3) My good friend failed for driving in the oncoming traffic lane. Most of the turns in our town had a left turning lane when you want to turn left. All of them except a couple of intersections right next to the courthouse. He needed to turn left - so he assumed there was a left turning lane and pulled to the left. Well there wasn't - there were just two lanes - each going in opposite directions. You can imagine the horror on the tester's face.

#3 is an example of someone who needed to test drive the area.

is that really how u supposed to do. Or is it depends on states?

It may depend on the state, but I haven't yet taken a test in a state that allows it. Imagine the worst case senario: you pull up into the intersection and the oncoming traffic doesn't let up. They just keep coming and as usual many people run the yellow light, then some start running the red light. Suddenly there is a green light in for the cars driving in the perpendicular direction and you are stuck in the middle of the interesection with no where to go - blocking their traffic. Now imagine one driver in that perpendicular direction has the light timing down pat - so he doesn't ever have to break for the red light and knows it will turn green just as he gets to the intersection. Now you are stuck in the middle of the intersection with a car just 20 feet away heading toward you at 35 mph. I've seen that happen (and I've read about accidents frequently that happened for that exact reason). So that is why it is illegal.

So after two cars drive through the red light in the on coming lanes, is your time up? Or can you then be the 3rd car? We can go on and on like this...

no the general rule is that u have to clear intersection. So who ever is in intersection after red light is on and incomoming cars stopped moving, u have to make your turn and clear intersection.

That bold part is risky - you are hoping the incoming cars stop moving in time for you to get safely out of the intersection. Imagine you are turning left from a two way street to a one way street at the interesection. The incoming cars just don't stop running the red light - and you are sitting there and will be the first car hit from an inattentive driver who just saw the green light and not you sitting there. You are now dead - does it matter to you who was doing the illegal driving?

I'm not claiming it is illegal in California - but I am claiming it is a stupid risk.
