there are so many choices on amazon not really sure where to start aside from pick the ones with the larges amt of reviews and >4 stars so I wanted to see if you guys had any recommendations.

One thing I wanted to ask was whether they come as short as 3ft or so? Most of the times we're sitting on the floor for the an impromptu portrait ... so I just want to have something hold the camera and I can snap a picture with the remote. Also, might be nice to have a tripod to take some videos of my friend's wushu team performance.

thanks guys!

i have a manfrotto 055xprob with a manfrotto 488rc2 head...works well for me...the carbon fiber version is too rich for my blood.

they can all be set to 3', just don't extend the legs much or at all.

yeah, prob. won't need the carbon fiber either ... since i'm just starting out and 75% of my pictures are family pictures, nothing too super serious ... something that works, light, and durable. if it's too heavy or bulk to carry around it might just sit there but want it durable enough so I can toss into the trunk.

budget-wise, nothing more than $25-$30, let me know if this number even makes. I see a bunch on amazon around that price range. The $60 ones are prob. too much for me to appreciate.
