Ahh, section of I-5 closed, how can I get back?

[LOS ANGELES & VENTURA CO'S]
IS CLOSED FROM 4 MI NORTH OF THE JCT OF SR 126 /LAKE HUGHES RD/
(LOS ANGELES CO) TO 25 MI SOUTH OF BAKERSFIELD /LAVAL RD/ (KERN CO)
/GRAPEVINE AREA/ - DUE TO SNOW - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE
ROUTE

I'm heading from the Bay Area down to the UCLA area tomorrow, and if this area is still closed how can I get around it? I suppose the 101 would be the best way to head down at some point, but where should I connect to it from the 5?

good thing my sister is flying back down there. I'd say chances are 50/50 she'd get into an accident in those conditions

take 101 down its the best.

The difference between 101 and taking the alternate is negligible.

If you take the alternate which is I-5 south -> Hwy 41 West ( Kettleman city ) then merge into Hwy 46, you catch the 101 at paso robles. Then take 101 South to LA.

However if I were you, take the 101 down, its the same distance.. (I come to Santa Barbara from sac via that route on the 5 to the 41,46,101) and its 400 miles, its the same using 80, 680, and 101. So just take the 101..

Plus you never know if Hwy 41 or 46 is flooded.

I am driving up to sacramento tommorow, im taking the 101.

bahh...just get an all white jeep 4x4 with white snow tires and drive through the thing on a moon lit night without yer headlights on....hehe

you could take highway 1 all the way down i think, but i think it connects to the 101 somewhere before the grapevine. i usually just take 5 all the way down; i've never been caught up in the grapevine because of snow, but i did get caught in very very bad fog, could not see 3 ft in front of me, all cars were going like 15-25mph, with emergency blinkers going to see the car in front of you.

If all else fails, or your're already there, you can get on the 138 at the LA County line and head east to the 14 and take that south until it hits the 5 again.

That area is so BFE that you can almost hear Duelling Banjos in the distance... 😉

The 101 is an extra 50-60 miles or so, but if the roads are still closed that might be the best, and simplest way..

If you are comming from the Bay Area just take the 101 all the way to the 1 then from the 1 go to LA.

Now if you said Sacramento I would have told you to take 99, the 58 then take the 14 to LA but your not comming form Sacramento.

But the worst way you could take would be I-5 to the 41 to the 46, to the 101 That is more than 60 miles longer than taking the 101 the whole way down.

Wouldn't work since 138 is after the closer happens.

Goddamnit the 5 is still closed. Will have to take the 101 then =/

Going to leave in a few minutes..if you don't hear back from me it might not only because I "syringered" the story.

Whoo, I made it back. The 101 drive was actually not as bad as I thought it'd be..an extra 40 minutes or so with nice scenic views and a nice fun twisty road at the end.

I just checked the 5 though, and it seems it's open now..oh well.

WTF is snow doing in Southern California?

whenever there is a major storm plus freezing ass conditions, it snows in the grapevine (mountains before LA)

due to paranoia and many idiotic drivers, they just close off the five. there was also ice on the road, so it'll probably be closed again soon.
