ahh - need new video card

well got a 2007wfp and my video card won't support 1680 x 1050
sooo what's a good yet cheap video card that will support 1680 x 1050

i am not a gamer etc - just need this resolution so don't see blurry anymore.
 
What vid card do you have right now? most video cards will support up to 20x15 resolution. have you updated your drivers?
 
I'd get the cheapest ATI AGP X-series card (i.e. X300) you can buy. NVIDIA will work fine too, just some say ATI's 2D quality is better.
 
get the geforce 7800 gs,or gainward bliss 7800 gs 512mb GLH(not sure ofmodel,but its supposed to be a 7900 gt with 512mb which is portedover to agp)That will run at 1680x1050 easily.

any vid card will run at 1680x1050 nicely. since he's not a gamer, the 7800GS is overkill for him.

I would recommend the cheapest low-end ATI X1xxx series card you can find (i.e. X1300). ATI's new series' image quality with Avivo is lauded as an excellent video solution, especially if you don't game.

That one should do it, but I'd recommend this. Cheaper after rebate too.
 
I'm in the same situation as silverspear - will be purchasing a 2007wfp or other 20.1" WS from HP, Samsung, Viewsonic, etc. I run Linux exclusively (I'm pretty noobish), where reportedly support is better for Nvidia. 2D is most important to me, but if ATI and N are close, that's fine. I also don't game, and would like to get a PCI-E (?)(am in the process of building a new system, using the archives, etc)? Currently using a Matrox G400. I do ocassionally watch some fast-action DVDs, and might be working with 12MB - 17MB raw TIFFS in the GIMP, if that matters, and would like a moderately quiet, possibly fanless vid card (although latter no necessary). It doesn't seem like I need much vid card, but also don't want it to be a choke point. Would the eVGA Geforce 6200 128MB, or PCI-E equivalent be all that I need? Thank you

if you don't do anything in 3D it's very difficult to make the video card a choke point.
 
So in my current/old system, one or combination of - PIII 650, AX6BC 440BX 100MHz FSB, ATA 66 on a Promise Card, 512MB CAS2 SDRAM (Mushkin or Infineon) (with G400 32MB) - is/are causing my slow 2D performance, where a 2MB jpeg gets 'dropped-in/painted' from top to bottom upon opening (takes a second or so)? Thank you
 
p.s. - forgot to add also get dropped frames when watching a DVD (likely the old but not ancient! 650MHz CPU)?

It sounds like a combination of slow CPU and RAM. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but JPEG decoding is done by the CPU, so you'd have to replace your CPU, motherboard, and RAM to improve performance. If you want recommendations, maybe you should post a new topic in the General Hardware forum to avoid hijacking this topic.
