Well I turn 20 in less than two months, I'm a sophomore in college, and my gaming and frequent upgrading days are already slipping away. With 15 credits in engineering, 15 hours/week of job, and my social life and down time, there is simply no time. And even when I do game, it is only for brief 15 minute or so spurts before I get bored and quit. I'm not all that interested in the new stuff except for a few particulars (Crysis, HL series), and I'm not all that ready or excited to swap out my single core CPU and 1 gig of memory for something bigger and faster.

From reading posts of the older folks here on AT, I knew this would happen one day, but I didn't expect it so soon!

I haven't been able to play games for more than 15 or 30 minutes at a time for quite a while

Welcome to adulthood. Some reach it earlier than others. You're one of the lucky ones.

Me too. I'm only 18 and I can't game for more than a few hours a week. My problem is that nothing else interests me either. I just keep myself busy with school work.

i bought a gamecube to deal with my gaming needs after i slowed down. upgrading a tower is too pricey. the gamecube is cheap and easy to get stuff for, and i dont game anywhere near enough to even *want* to spend money on a new console

Lucky that I'm reaching it sooner rather than later?

I feel the same way. I just don't care much for gaming anymore. It is nice every now and then, but nothing special. When the time comes to get a new notebook (2+ years from now), I'll probably get one with integrated graphics just for the extra battery-life and smaller size since gaming is no longer an interest.

Definitely better sooner than later.

I hear ya, man. The only thing I play at all these days is my Wii, and that's usually just sunday nights when I have time and am bored, and maybe for an hour - two hours tops. Like the others have said, I guess this is adulthood... hehe. I turn 21 in 3 months.

For me it was the Xbox360. Way cheaper than the PC upgrade I was planning on, but still an upgrade from my PC so I am actually playing new games. Good to have for parties too.

I still don't have any reason to switch. I already tried Linux, gaming wasn't even my problem with it.

Heh, I stopped upgrading the computer recently when I had 13 units and 30+ hours of work.

I still game whenever I've got spare time and in the mood to play.

Wow, I still play all the time and I just turned 22. I work 25 hours a week and take 10 credits at college.

Part of it may be due to the frequent changes in upgrading. For me, I just can't update. At one point I was like "I'll just wait until the dual core CPUs are the main thing." Then I was like "Well I'll just wait until the DX10 cards are mainstream." And now I'm thinking "Well lets see what ATI has to offer that's DX10." Pretty soon it will be "I wanna wait until the 64-bit OS is mainstream." At some point, you just gotta dive in.

Part of it may also be due to the inconsistency of your life. New classes, new people, etc. can really take it's toll. I was the same way a couple of years ago...but now I've bene at the same job and college for awhile and had the same gf, that video games are much easier to get into since I'm a lot more comfortable with my life.

If you really wanna be a gamer (not saying that you should, but it's not a bad thing), it will come back to you and you will make time for it.

If you still really want to be a gamer, you haven't quite grown up yet.

I really disagree. What's so childish about gaming? A friend of mine is a huge gamer at 40 years old, and guess what? He's very financially successful and works very hard.

Adulthood isn't about what you do, it's how you act.

I'm sure you were half joking, but your post was still annoying, and I wasn't exactly complaining about it. I'd rather be doing things that are helping my future and hanging out with people. Everyone needs down time, but now my down time is filled with trendy TV shows and relaxing/talking to people/listening to music instead of gaming.

I agree, you aren't necessarily childish if you game, especially if it's on a console. However, if it's on a PC, and if you frequently do it alone while your wife and kids are doing other things, then yeah, maybe you're a bit childish.

That is one thing I don't want to do (converting to a laptop). My desktop powers my 5.1 sound system, my TV tuner, bigger screen and nicer keyboard/mouse, and affords me more and cheaper hard drive space. A laptop could be handy but still can't be my main machine, even without gaming.

I'm 43, run my own fairly successful business, love gaming & with any luck won't have "quite grown up" on the day I die!

If "growing up" means giving up doing things you enjoy & which require imagination to participate in, then its no wonder so many "adults" are such miserable people! ;)

Edit: Btw I also have two daughters who I spend a lot of time with doing thing besides sitting in front of a PC/gaming console.

Yup. There was a time where I fully experienced the immersion factors of a game. Now I just play America's Army at random spurts with no immersion at all. Single player games have gone out the Window until summer.

I'm 19 too :(
