hi
my computer must've buped into things on its way to college, cause when i opened the case the heatsink/fan had broken off, and possibly knocked into something
i put it back on (twsty tie :] ), computer starts up, no beeps, no video, all fans running, harddrives boot up, but it stops there
no bios screen or anything ..nothing on the screen at all except for that monitor "you have no video" screen
i have an iwill xp333-r mobo in RAID striped mode (80gb), 2 sticks of 256mb ddr ram (one pc2100 other pc2400), and an athlon xp 1700 . ..

i dont know how to see if the processor has fried or if it is broken. if i look really close there MIGHT be a very tiny piece in the corner of the chip that isnt there, but i dunno. . .and underneath the processor in the center, it is a little darker, a little blacker than the rest of it (fried?)

PLEASE HELP!!!

Well hopefully it is not fried. Did you turn it on before you realized the hsf fell off? Try reseating the vid card and ram. Maybe the hsf bumped one loose.

nope, didnt turn it on before it fell (heard something was wrong) ... but when testing to see what was wrong i left it off once for a few seconds (i have no idea why) .. . plz tell me that couldnt have done it . . .

and yea i tried resetting the bios ..even pulled out the battery
one of the leds on the mobo is on too, the one right below the farthest down pci slot ? what does that mean?

Pull out the processor and memory and reinstall to make sure they are secure.

Pull out all cards (video, nic, etc) and reinstall.

Verfiy that all cable (IDE, power, ect) are firmly secure.

I would bet that something is just not making a good connection. Hopefully, you had no "metal touching metal" while the power was on :Q

Sorry 🙁 the CPU iiiiiiiiiiiissssssss toast! Pick up a 1600+ for 55$ shipped@Newegg.

ok, thanks
so i get a new cpu then . . .but how should i attach the heatsink? it broke off, one of the plastic thingies that holds it down got pulled off ..there are 3 plastic things on each side though, so i might be able to find one that uses the 2 others

Sorry but I'm going to have to agree here. If you turned it on with the heat sink off for even a few seconds its toast. Too bad you didn't have a p4(or a motherboard that takes advantage of AMD's thermal protection), I think the thermal protection on them would have saved you.
