Is that anything like a new sailor being set out on watch against "Sea Bats"?
We'd send all the boots down to get an HT punch or a couple rolls of gig line.

One of the simple joys of having children is that you get to pull all the pranks they've never seen before on them for the first time.
I just had my youngest, 10, make a fist with her thumb inside, to protect her thumb I said, and punch me in the arm as hard as she could. She was very enthusiastic about getting a free punch in, and hit fairly hard, and then yelped when it hurt her thumb. Lol!
Then she ran upstairs to play the trick on her older sister, who'd already knew it of course, and, while I'm not sure exactly how it all played out, I heard her yelp again and her older sister came downstairs laughing.
It was all in fun and nobody is traumatized for life or anything. But she's is trying to figure out how she can use the new trick on her friends at school.
tbh if you punch correctly it won't really matter where your thumb is, as the force of the punch will be on the 2 knuckles, in line with the rest of the bone in your arm.
but not punching correctly, in addition to having the thumb inside the fist, can break your thumb. just a thought.
