Ah sh*t - Car Problems

I had not driven for more than 5 minutes and the engine suddenly revs up and my speedometer goes to 120km/h from 60km/h in about a second. I stop at a light and the engine revs when the light turns green, but I don't go any where. There was transmission fluid sitting on the ground after my car is moved.

I ended up having it towed to a family friend's house that had just finished putting a bunch of new stuff into the car

Any ideas about what this is? Broken line?

1993 Toyota Camry

Cliffs:
1. Engine revs
2. I don't go anywhere
3. Don't know what is wrong

It's possible he pulled a line from the transmission cooler and didn't put it on tight enough. If that popped off it'd proceed to pee all the fluid onto the road until the pump in the transmission ran dry.

He was replaceing the struts/shocks, cv boots and cv axle if that is any help. I sure hope it is this and not a broken tranny.

Ahh, most likely the seal between the CV joint and the transmission isn't seated, got pinched, or tore. (or in some cases, bent) That'd also leak the fluid onto the road until it ran dry.

I am going to have to borrow some money from my parents I think if it is a new tranny. I've already sunk 550 into the stereo and 750 in parts and labor.

Any idea how much the tranny will set me back?

Yup - something got hosed while replacing the CV axle. Time to take it into a real shop.

I don't think the transmission itself is at fault. Look at the axles meet the transmission and see if that's where the fluid is coming from. You can probably add fluid and get the car moving on it's own. (until it drains out as well)

I thought Japanese cars were 100% perfect 100% of the time. I didn't know Japanese cars could break down, no matter the age!

Tranny rebuild + installation = 2k minimum.

Find a tranny at a junk-yard + installation = 1000-1500

He is an excellent mechanic and his son is a mechanic as well (Diesel Mechanic). That, and he only charges 25 dollars per hour because I am a friend. He will most likely fix this for free as well as help me re-wire my left speaker on my car stereo because it doesn't work :( .

OKay, since sarcasm's off the charts here:

Should've gotten a vehicle with a live axle, then none of this would have happened. :D

They are close to perfect but nothing is 100%. It's rare but it does happen. Kind of like UFO sightings. :p

it only broke because of the strain of his new stereo, jackass.

j/k. ;)

although, that brings up a good point for the OP: next time don't spend your only $1300 on a stereo for your 12 year old car that is going to need repairs down the road, jackass.

Oopse, that must have came off wrong. I spent 550 for the stereo and intstalled it myself.

750 for new struts/shocks, cv boots and cv axles.

Anyway, it turns out that it was just a connection somewhere, and I leaked out all of the tranny fluid... so now I have a new question... What kind of tranny fluid does a 93 camry take?
