Ah...I love XP clean installs

Just performed a clean install of XP Pro on my system. It's geat how everything is recognized and supported, and how the installation is largely unattended.

Everything is so crisp and fast and new. I like it a lot.

Any comments? 😀
 
i'm installing it so i can figure out what the hell my customers are talking about... the question is to build a new pc or not to do it?
 
I was jsut thinking... how long has XP been out. Less than a year? If you've actually installed it enough times already that you can say "I love XP clean installs" it doesn't say much for the reliability of the OS. We've got machines here that have been running the same installation since 1999. We'd have older ones but they were replaced due to aging hardware...

You obviously don't upgade machines and parts on a monthly/bi-monthly basis, or build machines from scratch every month for customers/friends/family.
 
I gotta buy and learn how to use Ghost. I heard the best thing to do is reformat your hard drive, do a clean [legal] install of your OS, tweak your settings then ghost your hd's image? Should I install ICQ, AIM, e-mail then Ghost or Ghost before installing apps?

i personally do a clean install with all my apps that i use and updated drivers.. ~4-5GB total and then ghost it. with compression set to high, i was able to span it on 4 cdrs. that's just me though. i also have 1 cdr with just a clean install just in case.. 🙂
 
My tools machine at the office was built on NT4 four years ago, upgraded to W2K, will be upgraded to .NET server... and very very few OS problems in that timeframe.
 
Ive had much less issues building XP rigs than 2k rigs.

XP is my OS of choice. 🙂

I tried usng ghost but it wouldnt recognze my SCSI hdd...

Naw.. I don't hate it. It's not the greatest thing in the world either. I just think it's currently a necessary evil. 😉 I wish I could use Linux, but I can't play my games in Linux....yet.

Myself, I use 98SE. It's been good to me. I am ready to update but I just can't decide whether to go with 2000 or XP. I don't know why its so tuff for me to make up my mind.

Probably because I own a copy of an OS that gives me no problems and that I am about to pay money for one that will make my life a living hell (for a while anyway).

WTF are you talking about? If your to helpless to clean out the crap you install you shouldn't be using a computer. Sure 9x based os's had problems with slow down after a few months of use, but Win XP/2000 do not have such problems.
 
Win2K user here, too. One thing I do hate (very much) about clean installs is all the visits to windowsupdate.microsoft.com, which result in multiple reboots. Why do they DO that?

Oh yeah... I'm building my family a new rig when I go home this evening (err, 250 mile trip) and I can't wait for that part!! 😀 It feels like Christmas today...

My installation has some problems after just a few months of use.
Sometimes it doesn't boot up right....the taskbar icons will not come up and the cursor keeps the hourglass shape. I'll have to do a control-alt-delete to have the Task Manager come up and then reboot from there. If I'm lucky it will boot up OK the next time, but sometimes it takes a few tries. I'm not using any cheap memory or other hardware either.
