I am still a widescreen hater..... maybe this experience will change my views over the coming 2 weeks before I start Calculus III and Microsoft SQL Sever classes this summer.

You still get black bards because of aspect ratios. Your monitor is a 16x10 aspect ratio, while the DVD is likely a 16x9 ratio.

No idea how anyone can hate widescreen though. Once you game in WS, you cannot go back.

Yeah i dunno, but i find setting up dual displays, etc. quite easy w/ ATi's CCC (Catalyst Control Center).

Depends what you mean by that.
You can set the display to "Centered Timings", which helps for running lower resolutions that the LCD's native.
E.g., let's say you want to run a game @ 1280x1024, it would then run in the center of the screen w/ black bars around all sides.
Unfortunately, AFAIK, the centered feature requires an LCD that supports that, & i'm not sure if all cheaper ones do.

More on gaming to come as I make a fully trial of my first widescreen experience beyond my 17" WS notebook computer. I would not mind some info on how to set that up to display properly with the latest version of AMD's CCC and a widescreen display (maybe I need to use a player other than MPC?)
That's normal.
Movies aren't 16:10, they're either 16:9 (1.77:1) or usually actually 2.40:1, which means black bars on every TV or LCD.

I'm a WS hater somewhat as well, but only on the smaller displays.
Anything 1920x1200 or higher i'm okay with, though for some games i run centered timings 4:3, since they don't always scale WS as i'd like.

Good luck!

As a widescreen hater, you have much to learn about the widescreen you hated. ;)
As mentioned above. Computers run 16:10, movies 16x9.

The black bars should not be overly visible if you got your monitor calibrated right, unless their is alot of bleeding.
If you didn't see black bars then I'd be concerned you weren't watching it in native resolution.

Besides, sounds like you didn't spend too much so don't expect the richest HD experience.

Again, most movies do not run 1.77:1 (16:9).

Most are 2.4:1, which is why you'll see massive black bars on everything still.

And the whole "z0mg WS gaming is the bestest!1!1" is BS spread by fanbois looking to justify their 1680x1050 or 1440x900 LCD IMO.

I don't really like games in WS, so right now i usually run @ 2048x1536 or 1600x1200 (since my current card doesn't do 2560x1600 so well).

Still has a far better / richer picture (and a 5ms response time versus a 16ms) when compared to the Dell 2001FP that I payed $600 for years ago, so I am not complaining.

So you likely don't wanna hear that your new Acer is actually a cheaper TN panel (poorer color accuracy & much poorer viewing angles) than your "old" Dell ;)?

At least assuming the Dell is an IPS, which it likely is.

Viewing angle does not matter, for I will be looking directly at it, as far as picture quality, I have them both displaying the same images (via my video card's dual DVI) and the Acer looks better (each is running at its native resolution, but then again this might be due to the age of my Dell 2001FP)

Actually, viewing angle matters a little more on larger monitors. The greater the size, the greater the angle at which you view the edges of the monitor. As the angle of a TN panel changes, it's colors change very noticably. If you get the monitor set up at just the right height and angle, then you likely won't notice much difference. But if you move outside this "sweet spot," then you will keep thinking "I am looking at it from the wrong angle."

I wasn't trying to crap up your thread, sorry :(

Was just being sarcastic regarding panel types, sorry...

As long as you're happy with your new LCD, that's all that matters.

The 2001 is an old IPS with very poor black levels and response times. The Acer is much newer and would be better despite being a TN.

That would explain why things seem to look better on the Acer than on the 2001FP (especially in games)

and n7, thanks for your input and I do not consider it thread crapping, its just that I figure that this thread will eventually turn into a widescreen versus standard flamewar eventually with a title and OP like that.

I don't mind WS vs. 4:3 flamewars

WS is nowhere near as beneficial as people make it out to be

That being said, i do like my WS, but that's more because of the size ;)
