hi
my computer must've buped into things on its way to college, cause when i opened the case the heatsink/fan had broken off, and possibly knocked into something
i put it back on (twsty tie :] ), computer starts up, no beeps, no video, all fans running, harddrives boot up, but it stops there
no bios screen or anything ..nothing on the screen at all except for that monitor "you have no video" screen
i have an iwill xp333-r mobo in RAID striped mode (80gb), 2 sticks of 256mb ddr ram (one pc2100 other pc2400), and an athlon xp 1700 . ..

i dont know how to see if the processor has fried or if it is broken. if i look really close there MIGHT be a very tiny piece in the corner of the chip that isnt there, but i dunno. . .and underneath the processor in the center, it is a little darker, a little blacker than the rest of it (fried?)

PLEASE HELP!!!

If you ran it for any significant time, you may have fried your CPU. You might start by reinserting all your cards to make sure everything is seated well. If it still does the same thing, and you have a friend with a motherboard that will take your CPU, try yours in his board. If he (or she) is willing, you could also try the other CPU in your motherboard. At least, that will clear up the question about the CPU.

Good luck. :)

I take it you didn't build this computer originally? Man that sucks. Hopefully it is a retail processor without any major chips in it and the warranty is still good. I'm sorry about your loss:(

Yeah...it doesn't sound good....I wonder if the heatsink hit the video card?...Does sound like it may have fried the CPU though, Athlons can cook themselves swiftly unfortunately.

ok, thanks
so i get a new cpu then . . .but how should i attach the heatsink? it broke off, one of the plastic thingies that holds it down got pulled off ..there are 3 plastic things on each side though, so i might be able to find one that uses the 2 others

If you can't keep the HS on, I'm afraid you're in for a new motherboard.

Motherboards are multilayer boards. Even if I could find the socket, a single unit would be pretty pricey. More important, I'm an electronic design engineer with good soldering skills, and I would be lucky to unsolder the socket successfully without damaging any traces or pads. Even then, considering the time it would take to try, it would be more effective to buy another board.

Sorry for your loss. :(

well, the board does have 2 more prongs per side to hold down the heatsink
...i ordered a new heatsink that has 3 little connectors on either side ...that should do it : ]
