First of all, if he's able to type in "cmd" then that means he's on a WinXP machine. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't bring up the Task Manager like it does in previous versions of windows that are not NT-based, it brings up the Windows Security box in which he can click on or choose the Task Manager. Closing the shell is entirely unnecessary.

Like HN said, removing the file extension may work, but I've never tried that.

Oh, and wrong forum

i dunno, i always do this with .avi files that windows seems to hold onto and won't let me delete (i know there's other fixes for this but this is the most convenient). i just do that delayed double click (click once to highlight, and once to rename), remove extension, and then delete.

Actually, if you're using the Welcome Screen, it brings up Task Manager.

Closing the shell is entirely unnecessary.

Not if Explorer is trying to query the file, much like the problems others have with corrupt video files and thumbnail generation.

In any case, ctrl+shift+esc == task manager no matter how you log in.

Actually cmd works in 2k too.

Last night I booted recovery console from cd to delete mydocs.dll

A good alternative if killing explorer.exe doesn't work.

Yeah .. you know, I posted in the networking forum like an hour ago and my thread has 4 views, 2 of which are mine.. I'd have to say the OP has a more successful plan.

Well FDISK would have been the best bet if the OP was running 9x. I'm so glad the days of the 9x are behind us. A turd would shine before the 9x.
