Fine,

$209, no rebate, and this X850XT is from Sapphire, not HIS. I'm sure if you look you could find a better deal.

A PCIe 6800GS can be had for as little as $170. At around $200, there are versions which are almost as overclocked as the only 7800GS worth considering -- the Superclock. A factory overclocked 6800GS PCIe vs 7800GS Superclock would be a very, very close race. The difference in performance will not be noticeable.

I know it's a badge of honor to say 'I'm still gaming like a modern man on AGP', but let it go. It's in the financial interest of both companies to stop supporting a second line of SKUs just for AGP. Help them out already.

I agree with you a $90 Mobo with a $200 6800GS PCIe would be the best bet.

Sounds like a sidegrade

Actually out of the gate the GS peforms at about the 6800GT level and has lots of OC headroom. Heck get an EVGS GS and a new board and you could step up to the G71 in 2-3 months when you have more money. Right now your using a 6600 Their will be a huge difference with the 6800GS, and while the step to a 7800GT is big its not quite as big.

Everyone must go AGP, it's so much faster than PCI, remember that? And it's true, just like it's theoretically true that pci express is faster than AGP. In the not to distant future I'm sure that the AGP bus would be saturated with the video cards at that time, and it would be stupid to stay with AGP then. But for right now, my oc'd p4 and 6800gs unlocked and @ Ultra speeds is more than enough to handle any game thrown at it. People will move to PCI express when they get a new computer. Until then, stop harassing everyone who still has a great gaming rig that's running on inferior (supposedly) hardware.

BTW, I'd love to just go down to my local computer store and order me some brand new parts just to help out these billion dollar companies, I just can't afford it right now! :(

The Great AGP defender are you. The fact is That Manufacturers whether you like them to or not have choosen to quickly cast of AGP. Bandwidth isn't the only reason, power from the port is another. Its getting to the point where even the lowest end Vid cards would require a power connector from the PS. For everyone who sits there and yells my card is fast enough good for you, but right now we are talking about a person who is looking to upgrade his stale AGP card, how can any tech say its a good idea to continue to throw money into a dying tech, its just going to make it that much harder for him to make the switch PCIe when it gets to the point where he needs to when he just spent $200-$300 on a video card.

Sell the 6600GT+mobo as a combo for $120 (or more). Buy a $280 7800GT + $90 pcie mobo if you're feeling rich, the $190 X850XT + $90 mobo if you're not. You could do the X850XT+mobo for 280 total, which is only a $160 upgrade. Waaay worth it.

where can I buy a X850xt for $190?

Your cpu is plenty fast. No need in dumping any more money into AGP. Get $250 7800GT PCIe by EVGA at Newegg. With 939 PCIe motherboard you'll have dual core support and an extensive videocard upgrade path. If you are on a budget get this:

PCIe 6800GS - $155
ABIT KN8 Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA - $77
It's one day sale today though!
Together, that's roughly $235 for a decent motherboard and 6800GS.

Sell your 6600GT for $80 and all this goodness comes to the cost of the videocard. It would be like getting a PCIe upgrade path for free :) instead of dumping $$$ into higher priced 6800GS or 7800GS cards.

PCIe X850 XTs are very cheap.

As for the OP, I would check out some of the PCIe mobo + 6800 GS/X850 XT deals others have posted. In the long run I believe it's more economical to take the PCIe path rather than blowing $200-$300 on another AGP card now. Besides, there are nice deals out there, like the one pointed out by RussianSensation above me.
