A PCIe 6800GS can be had for as little as $170. At around $200, there are versions which are almost as overclocked as the only 7800GS worth considering -- the Superclock. A factory overclocked 6800GS PCIe vs 7800GS Superclock would be a very, very close race. The difference in performance will not be noticeable.
I know it's a badge of honor to say 'I'm still gaming like a modern man on AGP', but let it go. It's in the financial interest of both companies to stop supporting a second line of SKUs just for AGP. Help them out already.
I agree with you a $90 Mobo with a $200 6800GS PCIe would be the best bet.
