AGP X1950 Pro power requirements

I've seen some posts similar to this...but still not sure....

I have an Antec True Power 480w PS. 22A on the +12v according to the sticker on the side of the PSU.

Graphics card I'm looking at are all ATI X1950 Pro AGP... one of several variants.

Here are a few, but not exlusive, examples:
HIS Hightech H195PRF512DDAN-R Radeon X1950PRO 512MB
HIS Hightech H195PRF256DDAN-R Radeon X1950PRO 256MB
HIS Hightech H195PRQT256DDAN-R Radeon X1950PRO 256MB IceQ3 Turbo


I've read people being able to run this with similar specs that I have...but not exactly.

I see requriemetns are 30A on the 12v, but my PSU says 22A on the 12v.... but for some reason I seem to recall, the Antec TruePower line will provide 22A for each 12V lead?????

Oh, for additional info..my rig is in my signature. I'm running stock voltages on my system and have OC'd the follwing.

Intel P4 3.0gHz CPU to 3.6gHZ
Apollo GeForce 6800 128mb AGP 325/700 to 400/865
Memory 2x 1GB running in dual-channel mode with aggressive timings...can't remember exactly, but they're pretty low and made a nice improvement on bandwith and latency.

My system is rock stable....typically only reboot it because of MS Updates. I never really spent the time to max-out my systems OC.

I'm curious as well. I've got the trueblue 480, and my 6800gt is getting a little long in the tooth. Not much interested in a full rebuild just yet though.

I am running a Sapphire X1950 Pro AGP 512mb on a Antec TruPower 3.0 (420 watter) with no problems.

Other things in it:
TV Tuner
SB Audigy 2 ZS
2 hard drives
1 DVDRW
1 Floppy
Various case fans
A64 4000+
2gb of ram

all sucking juice from it, you should be fine with the 480.

I am also running a X1950pro but mine is a Powercolor 256mb unit. The pwr supplied is from a 3 yr old Antec Truepower 430..supposedly 20 amps on the 12v line [ ref sticker on unit ]. No problems here, had this card for about 3 weeks..runs cool at 1600 x 1200 in CODUO on-line, and overclocks to 621 mhz G Core and 790 mhz on the Mem using the CCC that came on the Disk with the card. I tried the 7.2's but had some glitches. Go for it if you want to max out your AGP sys and give it one more shot of life.

you'll defentily want to sell your 6800gt to recoup the price.


Also, performance gain won't be massive.....it'll either smooth out your frame rates a bit, or help up the graphics candy a notch here and there....but not much more.


The exception will be games that run better with ATI GPU's than with NVIDIA GPU's.


I'm playing BF2142 a ton recently.... an ATI GPU will do much much better at this game than a NVIDIA GPU of the same level. Same is true for Half-Life2 based games....

How steady are your voltages?

If your 12V rail(s) don't droop much with your current rig under load & over clocked and your somewhat close to the requirements you should be fine.

according to the app "speedfan" my 12v is at 11.8 when idle... and voltage goes up to 11.9 when playing games or running prime95.

Your power supply looks to be the older ATX 1.3 TruePower units. The main way to check is to also see your 5V output. If your 5V is higher than 35A, it is the older model without dual rails.

5v output is rated at 38A. I'd say I got this unit in 2001 or 02....can't remember for sure.

So I guess no go for this video card without a new PS?



If so... what PS would be a good bet that would work in my current rig, but also support the newer standards?

I have an Antec NeoPower 480 matched with a VisionTek 1950 Pro AGP - absolutely no problems. This particular PS has two 18 amp rails.

I realized my rig have Antec SmartPower 2.0 350W so that means I can't buy Diamond Viper X1950 Pro 512?

In most cases I see the X1950 Pro is about 2x as fast than a 6800GT or even more.

A word of warning, my Antec TruPower died last night. Maybe it was not enough for this card........ (I have not used the x1950 pro for that long).

i would *not* skimp on a PS

like i did

for x1950p it is recommended to have 450w and 30w on the 12v rail for a reason

i ran my Sapphire x1950p/512M with my old ThermalTake 480w .. because i only had 18a on the 12v rail, i had to drop my OC on my CPU to make everything stable
she ran fine for 31 days and then suddenly artifacted and died

anyway i upgraded my PS to OCZ 850w ... admittedly overkill for this video card ... but i am looking ahead next year to my complete rig makeover... because video cards are only going to require more power and i want the option for SLI or xfire.

oh boy, I have visiontech x1950 pro 256Mb on it's way in the mail.............I have a Dell xps gaming rig with a 460 watt 17A @12v power supply

nothing overclocked, maybe I will under clock the x1950 pro a little

Your 480W will power that fine.

We have been running an X1950XT equipped system w/ an FSP 450W for some time w/ power to burn.

Your 480W will power that fine.

We have been running an X1950XT equipped system w/ an FSP 450W for some time w/ power to burn.

lol. i can't imagine you running sli or xfire. my guess is you bought the hype :laugh:

seriously though, what are planning thats going to require an 850w psu? i thought the next gen cards would see lower power requirements, as i think both amd and nv claimed last year.

from what i've read of yours, doesn't seem like you'd ever need/want more than that, tho i may be wrong.....
