AGP to PCI-E Adapter?

Does anyone know of an AGP to PCI-E adapter? I know there is a PCI-E to AGP adapter but I need the reverse. I'm going to be upgrading to a PCI-E mobo but I don't want to wait until December to upgrade my whole system. I currently have a Radeon 9800 Pro and the last time I checked it won't fit into a PCI-E slot.

Hmmm...perhaps if I use the Jedi mind trick I can convince it to work in the PCI-E mobo. I hope I didn't just say that out loud and type that in this post because that would be extremely embarrassing but not as much as telling everyone that I like to frequent the Blue Oyster bar on kareoke night in leather chaps and sing "It's Raining Men"....er I mean ummm nevermind.

So, if anyone knows of where I can find a AGP to PCI-E adapter, that would give me a warm fuzzy feeling that would be most gratifying!

There's a PCIe-AGP adapter? News to me. I doubt very much you'll ever find an AGP-PCIe adapter, either. (Yes, I'm reversing the terms, like you. It'd probably be more sensible to list the MB slot first.)

Your best bet would be to Just sell your 9800P and try to find a used X700P or 6600GT to tide you over.

I don't know if there is but I couldn't sell this card if I wanted to because I promised my son this system.

Ok thanx, I hope your wrong though. I didn't think there was but I didn't know for sure. I guess I'll just have to borrow a friends PCI card and use it until the new vid cards come out. I was hoping to keep the same functionality that I have now...oh well. I don't plan on upgrading no earlier than June, probably August. Even if I upgraded in June, I shouldn't have to use the PCI vid card more than a three months...I hope.

Yes, such a device DOES in fact exist!

It's called NEW MOTHERBOARD. Just search for it under nForce4 at newegg. :D

Funny but that wouldn't be an adapter would it. As I said in my original post, I would like to use the same video card that I'm using now until the new vid cards come out. For what it's worth I've already chosen the mobo I'm gonna get. The MSI Neo4 Platinum nForce 4 Ultra chipset. Again, my AGP Radeon 9800 Pro just won't work too well in that as well as any PCI-E mobo.

Unless I can find an adapter, I'll just have to borrow one of my friends old PCI video cards.

There is no adapter, end of story. Face it if you are going upgrade the board then you are going to have to buy a new card as well. Luckily they do make adapters since you probably don't have a 24pin PSU nor the PCI-E video card power plug either...

I think VIA was to release a AGP/PCI-E MoBo chip, not sure if it was for intel or AMD,but that could help you.

It's actually either called Rialto or HSI, call up ATI or nvidia, respectively, and see if they'll sell you one.

Sorry. I wasn't clear about what I plan on doing. I'm waiting on nVidia to release their G70/GeForce 7800 and I don't wasn't want to wait until that card is released (which will probably be a while yet). I guess I'll have to make do with a VERY low end PCI video card until then.

As far as my PSU is concerned, I'm gonna update that as well. I have an Antec 430 watt PSU currently and no it's only a 20 pin connector as all ATX PSU's are prior to PCI-E mobos. I plan on buying the Antec NeoPower 480 Watt PSU. I don't want to just barely have enough juice for my system.

The closest thing you can get is a motherboard that has both PCIE and AGP slots. I know one exists, though wheather or not you can obtain it in the retail channels easily is another question. And I don't remember what CPU is suppost to use it.

Thanx for the info but I'll stick with nVidia. VIA left a bad taste in my mouth the last time I had a VIA based chipset; then again maybe I shouldn't have been putting the mobo in my mouth (especially while it was on) STUPID STUPID STUPID! The doctor said I'm healing nicely though and that my lips will hopefully look human again after my surgery.

which brings up another question.... Will and Old PCI Video Card, the most powerful probably being a 5700le, or a 9250, work in a PCI-e slot? Is it backward compatible?

if you wanted the combo motherboard to tie you over.... heres a link to a post here in the forums

No, PCI and PCI-E have almost nothing in common except for the name. A PCI-E slot would have fewer data pins than a PCI slot would so the card wouldn't even be able to fit in such a slot.

And it wouldn't really matter, as all PCIe MBs are festooned with regular PCI slots.

SithTiger, just from a logistical perspective, no adapter would allow a card to fit into a regular case. So, electronics and cost aside, you'd need to apply a hacksaw to your case to accomodate an adapter and the corresponding increase in card height (the bracket would be farther away from the MB).

What are you upgrading to? Socket 939?

I don't know if they are backward compatible but the mobo I'm gonna get, the MSI Neo4 Platinum has 4 PCI slots and 2 PCI-E slots so I'm good either way. Originally I thought that PCI-E was backward compatible but if that's true, then why put 4 PCI 2.1 slots on the mobo?

Thanx for the links and although I'm not real fond of VIA, I must say the past 1 1/2 years for VIA has been pretty solid. I'll just have to suck it up and either wait or use an old PCI card. The PT880 Pro does look tempting though. If there were no nForce boards out, I most likely would go for this board. Actually, I'll look at the benchmarks for this board and if they are close to the Neo4 mobo and it seems stable, I'll give it some serious thought. It's very possible that the new cards might not be released until the end of the year and I couldn't handle not playing any games for 3 or 4 months as I once thought.

Thanx for the suggestion!

First post for me so.. here it goes:

I hate to disappoint all the nay-sayers, but there IS in fact an AGP to PCIE bridge. You can check it out HERE. Was just announced 'officially' today.

Whether I'd buy one or not.. that's a whole new thread.

Thanks for the heads up, Tipstaff. That looks kind of like I figured, but the integrated DB15 output is totally unexpected. How would a separate card be able to use it? Or did they integrate a cheapo 2D core into the riser itself to allow for BIOS configuration or even card install? I wonder if that'll appear in Windows as a separate card, and how it might affect performance?

They show a low-rise AGP card, which may well fit with the adapter in a regular height expansion slot. I see you basically swap your card's bracket with their half-height bracket, which then screws into the case. But how will a full-height card like a 9800P fit? They may have trouble with some cases, but I guess they can anticipate if cases follow a certain spec (e.g., ATX) that they have a certain amount of room to work with.

I didn't think it would happen, but I'm curious to see how it'll work with AGP cards fast enough to be worth carrying over. I wonder if it affects signaling at all, too.

It won't be for me, though, as there's no way this VGA Silencer'll work with that thing. :)

I don't understand the point... there are still AGP mobos, and almost all new video cards will be PCI-E. So isn't the point to a bridge card moot? I mean, the OP's only real problem is a lack of patience. If you are sticking with an AGP card, you can still get a new AGP mobo. If you are going to update to PCI-E, you get a PCI-E mobo. In a couple years, it'll all be PCI-E...

Thanx for the info, Tipstaff! That's exactly what I was looking for! I'm so happy I could put on a dress and have you spank me! Hmmm...hopefully they'll miss that last part. Um....er (waves hand) "You will not remember the prior sentence. Sithtiger is not GAY and you did not see him at a GAY bar last night. Furthermore, you will not tell his wife that you did not see him at a GAY bar last night!"

Seriously though, this rox! Now the only thing I'll have to wait for is for the Athlon 64 X2 4400+ to come out and then I'm ready to buy and the Albatron Bridgecard to come out. Of you know what's going to happen don't you. I'll get the bridge and then later that week, the 7800 will be released in massive quantities.
