AGP Questions

Does anyone know of a good guide describing the differences in the AGP slots. I opened up a Dell Computer today, a pretty powerful computer (Dual CPU, NVidia Quadro2, etc.) and I couldn't put in another AGP card, there was an extra notch in there. Anyways I'm just trying to clear up my confusion. Thanks

Nope, I had an old ATI Rage Pro that had a continous row of pins on the card and the connector on the motherboard had an extra notch in the middle of it. grrr I'm confused.

It could be that you are trying to put an AGP card that is keyed for 3.3v into a newer slot that only accepts cards that are keyed to 1.5v. I ran into this issue today. I sold my 9600 and shipped it off, but my new card won't be in for a few days. In the meantime, I tried putting in an old AGP ATI Rage card, and the slots on the Rage don't match the newer AGP 3.0 slot that I have on my motherboard.

The ATI Rage Pro, is a 3.3v 1x AGP card, so it is incompatible with newer motherboards, and won't fit in the slot. 8x, 4x, and some 2x cards, will work in a modern motherboard, that uses 1.5v agp slots.

If they didn't notch the slot (like the first i845 mobos...) you could fry the whole system with an old video card!
