Are most 8x AGP cards backwards compatible?

Say, I have a GF4 Ti4200 4x and purchasing an 8x AGP motherboard.

Compatible? Drop in performance?
 
Yep, buy the board and install the card. The motherboard will automatically detect AGP4X and set things up for you.
