agp, pci express

should i upgrade to a Nforce4 pci mobo now from a Nforce3 mobo AGP? I'm currently using A64 3000+ oc'd to 2.5Ghz.

I can't find any AGP gpu's beyond the NV 6800GT. I want to eventually get the G70 core, should I upgrade now to pci express NF4 mobo?

I'm using the NV 6600GT AGP by MSI. on a NF3 Epox9NDA3J AGP mobo with A64 3000+ S939 oc'd to 2.5 GHZ.

Are you using a NF 6800GT AGP ?

Yea, it's an AGP. There has been talk of the X1800XL, and possibly the XT being made in AGP, but that remains to be seen if they actually are. I personally think there's a good chance this latest generation of cards will have an AGP version released. If not I'll have to go PCI-e.

For you though, if you need to upgrade your VC right now, you'd be better off going PCI-e. The 6800GT would be nice upgrade for you, but when you can get a 7800 GT for the same price or cheaper it doesn't seem like a wise choice.

If you can wait a few months and you like you current MB, wait and see if AGP versions of the x1800's or 7800's start to appear.

Don't expect anything significantly faster than a 6800gt to be economically released on agp. If something is it will command a price premium because it requires a bridge chip and a specialty product and will take so long to come out that it will never be worth it. Nforce4 boards are cheap and available for s754 and s939. When you're ready to upgrade the motherboard will just have to happen too. I have an nf3 and 6800gt and will upgrade when I can double my performance, memory and get a major featureset upgrade in a $350 video card.

Thank you. Sounds like the way to go for me too. you mentioned major featureset upgrade in a video card? you are not referring to fps increases?

By featureset I mean major feature changes. Shader Model 4, DirectX 10, the transcoding assist on the new ATI cards is attractive to me... Things like that. I take the approach that if my card can still do all the things the newest cards can, it's not time to upgrade yet. I anticipate a refinement of this generation will come out in the form or r580 and a shrunken g70, but the value still won't be there for me to upgrade. Probably have to wait for g80/r600 series cards.
