hey,

I am looking at getting a replacement for my broken ati x800 256 mb. I wanted to get a nvidia because i have never had one before i heard good things, and this is my second ati to break in less then a year. I dont want to spend too much because i dun play that many games. I was wondering if anyone knows what nvidia would be comprable to the x800. thanks to anyone who can help me out.

An Nvidia card comparable to the X800 vanilla is, I believe, the 6800 vanilla. However, you might want to step up to a 6800 GS/GT for some more performance. At this point, though, for those cards, it's likely best to look for used.

I dunno really want a used card, I have been looking at the agp's on newegg that offer 256 mb ram, and there are a bunch ranging in price from 50 - 250.

Perhaps you should be looking into WHY the cards are "break"ing before buying another replacement

Exactly what do you mean by "break"?

my first one was a 9800xt and it overheated and burnt, not because i was overclocking or anything like that because i dun like to overclock. the second one just the worked for a while and then froze every once and a while i am not sure why but i got a full refund on both. I want to keep the noise and the heat down if anyone needs to take that into account.

Freezing and dying seems like a power problem to me. What is your power supply brand and wattage rating? It sounds liek its underpowered to me and killing itself from the lack of it.

I am trying to spend less then 150 dollars.

I have gotten a new power supply since the first one, how many watts do you think i would need. its a 400 watt, antec, and the old one was just the one that came with my case. simple 400 watt.

a 400 watt antec should hold your system pretty well. That is odd. what is yor full system specs? how many fans/hdds/optical drives/ add in cards/ processor? Also which antec is it, a Truepower II or what?

I picked up a BFG 6800GT OC off the FS forum for $150 shipped. I've seen them sell on Ebay for right around that price point also.

Just check out the shop.ati.com

they are selling a refurb x800xl for $ 119 and a brand new x850pro for $ 119 also :). It will dominate over the 7600GS

Yes,

but will they dominate a 7600 GT, AGP?

And, can the 850 pro be unlocked?

thanks,

John

Either one of those would be fine if you're getting a PCI-E mobo. Otherwise, none of those cards are AGP. With only $150 to spend it might be best to stick with AGP for now since you can't really get a good GPU/mobo deal under $150. If you want to try nvidia, THIS is the best AGP 7600GS that newegg has. The 6800 GS/GT would outperform this card, but you'd likely have to resort to getting it used for your price range.

And for the record, 7600GT is PCI-E, not AGP.

I was reading somewhere that you need a special power supply with pci express. does anyone know if this is true or not? thanks for your help.

Well good luck finding a PCI-x* video card. They are non existant IIRC. Now, on the other hand, PCI-e** video cards are almost a dime a dozen these days.

*PCI-x is short for PCI Extended
**PCI-e is short for PCI Express
They are completely different from one another please don't mix them up.

PCI Express was designed to deliver power directly to the card through the PCIe bus, but not long after PCIe was implemented, graphics cards started using so much power that an external power thing had to be used anyway. I believe this is the same way with AGP, though.

For best performance at a lower price I too would generally recommend a 16 pipe X8xx variant however the OP wanted nVidia and doesn't need anything better than an X800 (presumably 12 pipe?), so the 7600GS fits the bill. If equivalent performance was desired from the nVidia side without throwing money away on a specialty 7900 based card (Gaywad 7800GS+), then the 7600 GT or GST is the answer although they are not widely available yet. I have heard rumours on teh internets that maintstream 7900 AGP's may be forthcoming.
