I got a nice sum of money for Xmas and I am looking to purchase a new AGP video card to replace my aging 9600 Pro in my Athlon 64 socket 754 rig. I am in Canada, looking to purchase from NCIX.com and here are the most popular options according to them:

eVGA E-GEFORCE 6600GT 128M: $178.22
Sapphire Radeon X800 GTO 256MB: $250.66
BFG GeForce 6600 GT OC AGP8X 128MB: $193.75 (after MIR)
EVGA E-GEFORCE 6800XT 128M: $232.56

All prices are in Canadian dollars (100CAD = 85USD)

What do you guys suggest?

The x800gto 256 can be had for $30 less than that @ allstarshop.

edit: nm that's canadian dollars i guess.

Well, anyway, get the gto imo

Get the gto for fastest performance out of the 4 choices, or the cheaper 6600gt to save money. The OC'd gt is not worth the extra money, and the 6800xt is somewhere as fast as the 6600gt, so it's not worth the price either.

The X800 GTO 256mb card is the fastest on your list, but also the most expensive. A used 6800GT could be had for that amount and would be quite abit faster.

Anyone else wanna voice their opinion on this? There must be quite a few people out there that recently upgraded their AGP video... speak up! :)

Going slightly on a tangent here because I'm very seriously contemplating replacing my aging GeForce 3 with a 6600 GT as an interim upgrade.

Does anyone know what rail should be used to power the external power connector on a 6600GT AGP? I would think it's the 3.3V rail, since that's the voltage the AGP slot requires. If that's the case, one shouldn't really require a power supply with dual 12V rails.

I am not upgrading the rest of my system (Athlon XP 2500+ Barton oc'd mildly - to 2 GHz, 512 + 256 MB of Mushkin HiPerf PC2100 DDR non-oc'd, a couple of PCI add-on cards, two hard drives, two optical drives and a couple of USB drives are more or less always connected) and my current 300W PSU does just fine even under heavy gaming and stuff. However, with a 6600GT onboard I daresay I'd require atleast 400-425W.

I'm considering the Antec TruePower TPII-430 and the Enermax EG425P-VE. Even the Fortron Source AX-450 PN and Thermaltake W0062RU look good. All of these and more are what I arrived at here -

However, if dual +12V rails are not really required, the OCZ ModStream 450 and PowerStream 420 are good options too I suppose.

Comments?

Thanks in advance and wish everyone a wonderful New Year ahead!

Zim, after seeing the price-revision, I think your best advice is to go with jjl51's link to LogicComputerHouse.com... for $155 in Canadian-dough, the BFG 6600GT OC is a good deal and a nice upgrade in performance as well.

Appu, you do NOT need a dual 12v rail PSU to run a 6600GT. Just use the standard every-day power dongles with any PSU to power the 6600GT. As for the GeForce-3, it's not "aging", it's pushing up daises! I loved my GeForce-3 when I had it, but that card saw the end of its days some time ago. Good luck with your 6600GT... it's a nice card!

Hehe.. good one about the GeForce 3. I was trying to be mild :).

Thanks for the tip on the power supply. As I said, this is just an interim upgrade so don't want to spend heavily. Hence the 6600GT - that'll do just fine for the games I play and the resolution (10x7) I run them at.

At $160, that card is a damn good bargain... but looks like I have to pull the trigger on that today! The fine print says: Valid when bought between 2005-12-01 and 2005-12-31.
This rebate must be postmarked by 2006-01-31.
