AGP 8X really that good????

Is it worth it getting the Asus A7V8X for Radeon 9700Pro for it's AGP 8x? I am looking for a motherboard replacement right now. Either that or just a cheaper KT333 mobo. Thanks

Make sure your 9700 can work on that 8x motherboard, some don't. ATI can replace your card if that's the case.

Good advice! Also the 8x is largely a marketing technique from what I've seen so it shouldn't be a major factor in the purchasing process.

Shoot, too late I just ordered the A7V8X from Newegg.com for $175 shipped. :| But I do like the build in 10/100/1000 LAN, Sound, Serial ATA.... But same for Serial ATA, it is useless at this time.

I hate it when I get the buying rush feeling inside ......Got me again :|

Does the extra bandwidth offered by 8x get used yet? Can the procs/mobo/gfx card or whatever get use out of it to improve performance?

considering we haven't really maxed out AGP 4X at all, and the speed diff. between AGP 1X and AGP 4X is negligible in most cases, AGP 8X is nothing more than marketing hype.

Heck...ATA133 and ATA100 are rarely used or realized....We barely sustain ata33 speeds while some of the newer are along ways from ata66 speeds....

Anandtech commented back briefly the lack of need for the agp 8x and the heavy bandwidth at present day with current games. He sorta stated it may fuel designers to take advantage of it, but we have all seen how long it takes many of them to use current microsoft direct x standards...

duvie hit the nail on the head, instead of making all these damn new standads and protocols, these hardware makers should try and make devices that can remotely attain the speeds. Sheesh, the fastest IDE drive doesn't even max out the ATA 66 spec, only in bursts can it exceed it. The fact that AGP 8X has caused so many problems early on (although this may be specific only to ATI) is not a good sign.

Pretty much already been said but until new games/programs come out to take advantage of these features they are pretty much useless. Basically ATA 133, DDR 400, and an 8X video card are strickly for bragging rights.

Thats how it goes They give us stuff we dont need thats cheap to implement like ATA 133 and AGP 8X that we dont need but cant give us 10K IDE HDs .

Be patient. ATI will patch it, or a bios upgrade next month will support it. Is there any reason you can't run it at 4x till then?
