Geez..you mean I didn't have to give up my 1700 XP system just yet? I upgraded to my current system so I can play BF2. The 1700+ was doing fine for what I do daily...just needed a better video card.

Good luck guys with your AGP. I knew there was still life in those systems

That's a minimum of $520. What if the 7800GS was $300?

$520? $265 GT and a $100 mobo. $100 more for a CPU but you can easily sell the old stuff to set off some costs
Where for $265? $100 for a 939 cpu? Used sure, i'm talking retail.

I wonder if I could sell this old AXP 1700+ cpu i have lying around.

Dam (sic) AGPers thats what you get for not upgrading... for the price of this, you can almost get yourself a PCIe based motherboard AND a 7800GT
So, in other words, for the price of this you can't get a PCIe based MB and 7800GT (almost only counts in nuclear warfare)... and of course you neglected the fact that we'd not only need a PCIe MB, but would quite possibly need a new CPU too (depending on what your AGP system currently has and what you'd upgrade to).

Why is it that everytime AGPers talk about uprading their video card, PCIe owners have some deep-seated need, nay obsession with doing some sort of "nya-nya you should or should have upgraded to PCIe". WTF?!?! Are PCIe owners fearful of the mere knowledge that AGP systems are still out there in number? Do PCIe owners get an extra $100 bucks in their paycheck everytime an AGPer upgrades to PCIe?

It's all fine and dandy if somebody says "I've got $800 bucks to upgrade my system, what should I do" and the answer is "get a new PCIe MB and yada, yada, yada". But this constant obsession with trashing AGP owners or nagging them about the need to have a PCIe system is really just totally out of line, and quite frankly annoying.

Do you have a PCIe system? Good for you! Congradulations! You're a great guy!

Feel better now? Good... now if somebody just wants to buy a video card for their AGP system and NOTHING ELSE... please keep your snake-oil, PCIe-sales-pitching, insult-everyone who has an AGP-system opinions off our threads!

Here's a challenge... find ONE THREAD talking about AGP video cards that doesn't have some PCIe owner jumping in and telling AGP owners they should get a PCIe system!
:D

Please just let AGP owners upgrade their video cards without telling us we should all be using PCIe... you're not helping, and you won't get a bonus in your check if we upgrade to PCIe either.
:p

I'm still undecided about what to do. My BFG 6800 GS arrives today, but I'm thinking about selling it (damn 15% restocking fee on returns) and waiting for the 7800 GS. I'll definitely be upgrading my whole system next year (possibly end of this year, depending on what's out there). Any advice (besides "upgrade everything now")?

Personally I'm not sure there is a huge advantage in a 7800GS over a 6800GT. As long as you intend to unlock the pipes on the 6800GS, you'll have a 6800GT.

If you're only going to run the card stock, and money is not a big issue, then by all means get a 7800GS. However, if money is a concern and you're okay with unlocking the GS to GT specs, then it all comes down to if you think $150 premium on a 7800GS over a 6800GT (equivelant) is worth the cost... if it were me, my hunch is that the performance differance won't match the price differance.

I'm not 100% sure how big a performance differance there is beteen the 6800GT and 7800GS, but I'm guessing that it's not huge (but I am guessing based on core speed and pipes being identical between the two cards).

I'm thinking a $200 purchase now makes more sense than a $300-350 in a week or two, when I'll probably upgrade to a $400 or $500 card a year from now. I think the 6800 GS should be good for now although I'll probably be avoiding these boards for awhile in case buyer's remorse sets in...

I know the core of the GF7 is superior to the core of the GF6, but the core speed and pipes available are identical between the 6800GT and the 7800GS... for those reasons I'm guessing that the performance differance won't be all that big... I'm sure the 7800GS will be "the fastest" AGP card, but probably not by a whole lot over the 6800GT.

I think the 6800GS is still the best "bang-for-buck" purchase in the AGP world right now, before and after the release of the 7800GS (unless the price comes way down of course).

Yeah, they did it using my card ;)

It's PCIe though not AGP.

Anyone know if any pipes on the 7800 GS can be unlocked easily? I'd like to see what the card is really capable of

Someone should ask the guy on HardForums that question.

Actually he already answered if it has pipes that unlock. He doesn't know concidering that the 7800GS is not supported by RivaTuner yet.

350US though is likely the MSRP of the card as this is a B&M thing which typically has the cards at MSRP right? Give it time to settle to ~ 240US of where it should be :)

You guys are crazy.

This card will have zero resale since everyone interested in performance graphics will have moved on to PCIe a year from now.

As mentioned get a board and a better card, the GT, for $340 now.

Are you guys gonna whine every new card release about no AGP? I hope not.

Give it time to settle to ~ 240US of where it should be

Even at that is a poor buy.

i think it will sell great even at $350 though $300 would probably be better.

there are tons of more novice computer users who still want to play the latest games who have agp machines.

MOST people cannot change out a motherboard. and even if they could a lot of people do not want to go through the hassle of it (i.e. reinstalling windows possibly)

i was considering upgrading to a 7800gt, but if this can be unlocked with rivatuner... then i may consider buying this instead (i have the asrock dual mb). seriously, if i can get 7800gt or better performance out of my agp slot, you bet i'm going to jump on that (easier upgrading of the extra guest machine).
another way to look at this is all the people who have socket 462 mb's with xp's rated @ 333+/=fsb and barton core cpu's, they definitely don't need to upgrade anything but their gpu.
however... the $300 makes me angry.
seriously nvidia, give up another 4 pipelines and another vertex shader, then charge $300-350
