AGP 4x on a 2x-only mobo?

Kind of a newbie question here: will an AGP 4x card work in a 2x-only slot without any problems? Some of the gfx cards I'm looking at are listed as 4x, don't mention that they'll drop to 2x, and I'm not really in the mood to buy a new mobo... :)

Thanks--

Thanks for the responses!

I've seen some cards that are marked as 4x/2x, and some that are just marked as 4x. Does the card need to list the multiple AGP rates (e.g. 4x/2x)? Or will a card listed only as AGP 4x automagically handle a slower 2x slot properly?

In other words, is AGP 4x the maximum bus speed the card can handle, like CD-R media marked as being burnable up to 16x speed? Or is it the required bus speed for the card, and the card is inoperable at slower bus speeds?

Thanks again--

Retailers are lazy to put full description,
and all modern mb have universal agp 1x/2x/4x slot,
and all modern vga card are universal agp 1x/2x/4x card,
so they just mention "4x" to emphasize that card is capalbe to run at 4x.
