AGP 2x vs 4x with Geforce2 MX

I've got a Geforce2 MX AGP video card in my Abit BE6 rev1 with 2x AGP. Will I notice a difference if I get a new motherboard with 4x AGP? Anyone have benchmarks on the size of the difference?

As of now there is virtually no difference between 4x agp and 2x agp. The only difference being that 4x agp can become unstable at very high fsb settings(+140mhz on Intel systems, don't know about AMD though). I always keep my agp setting at 2x on my Asus CUSL2, which, supports 4x agp.

4X agp is of no use at the current time, because there are no performance benefits on current games, and because it can tend to be unstable.

Smbu: thanks for replying... I guess I'll hold onto this board... The only thing that annoys me with the BE6 is the highpoint 366 UDMA/ATA 66 controller plus the ATA33 controller. Makes a complete install a pain with various operating systems when the computer is full 'o stuff.

Maybe I'll move this one to be a server and use my Intel motherboards from overstock.com... Once they get back from RMA (both were bad 🙁).

Anyway, thanks the reply, if you're still reading, thanks for reading this lengthy reply too 🙂.

There's no real difference between the AGP settings, other than the fact that AGP x 4 causes system instability and other problems. Just leave the setting at AGP x 2 and don't worry about AGP x 4.

Yep, BFG10x is right. In 99.99% of cases in games you can't tell the difference, only 3DMark ( that's something like /dev/random in *nix systems 🙂) produces ~5-10% bigger numbers.

BFG10K: I was wondering if I should buy a board that has 4x (if there was a performance difference). The BE6 rev.1 only supports 1x and 2x...

Thankfully it sounds like no permance difference so no worries.

No, it's not worth it. Don't worry about AGP x 4. AGP x 2 works just fine.
