Radeon 9000 has to be at least AGP 4X.
While it is DX8.1 hardware, it is DX9 compatible.
There were no 9700's with 256MB of ram as far as I know.
All AGP cards use a 3.3V supply. All AGP slots supply 3.3V to the card. It is the signaling voltage that is different, not the supply. 3.3V for 1X/2X, 1.5V for 4X, and .8V for 8X.
If your board will support that R9000, it should be good to go with newer cards. All 8X AGP cards will step down to 4X agp just fine, and there is no performance difference between 4X and 8X AGP.
