AGP 2x/DX8.1 running DX9 games?

I was just looking to shove an ATI 9000 128MB AGP 2x in my old BX mobo/1.4Ghz PIII so I can LAN with my son on Dawn of War. But minimum requirements are a DX9 graphics card. Is it possible to play a DX9 game on a DX8 card?

Here are the minimun requirements:

1.4 GHz Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon XP processor ? 256 MB RAM ? 2 GB free hard drive space ? 4x CD-ROM drive

? DirectX 9.0b compatible AGP video card with Hardware Transform and Lighting and 32MB of Video RAM.

And a DirectX compatible sound card.

Well, I don't have a DX9 sound card either so I guess I should just forget about it. I have an old TurtleBeach Montego sound card and I don't think it's worth it to buy another.

Maybe I'll just install it and see if my crusty old ATI 7000 can run it at all.

It means a DX9.0b compatible card
That means that you have to have DX9.0b installed, and the card must work with it.
Your card may only support DX8.1 or something, but it is still compatible with DX9.0b, you just can't use all the features.
Same for the sound card.

Maybe you might want to get a used 9700pro and use that in there, I got one in my bx mobo and works with 2x 3.3 volt agp slots like yours and the card is DX9.

I can get a 9700 pro 256MB. It seems that all of the 9700 series are compatible with 3.3v, no?

There is some confusion over whether a AGP 4x card will work in a AGP 2x slot and vice versa and etc. If you physically fitted a card into your motherboard but the signaling voltage between both is not compatiable, you can fry your both your card and motherboard.

Radeon 9000 has to be at least AGP 4X.

While it is DX8.1 hardware, it is DX9 compatible.

There were no 9700's with 256MB of ram as far as I know.

All AGP cards use a 3.3V supply. All AGP slots supply 3.3V to the card. It is the signaling voltage that is different, not the supply. 3.3V for 1X/2X, 1.5V for 4X, and .8V for 8X.

If your board will support that R9000, it should be good to go with newer cards. All 8X AGP cards will step down to 4X agp just fine, and there is no performance difference between 4X and 8X AGP.

I'm trying to choose between a 9500 or a 9700

In the link they use a 350Mhz PII so I'm guessing I would get better fps with a 1.4Ghz Tualatin core and a 9500 or 9700

Are you getting decent framerates and resolutions with some of the newer games?
And what cpu do you have? 1.4Ghz PIII?
